Putting More Money in Hoosiers' Pockets

Image

Wednesday, April 15, was Tax Day, and this year Hoosier families are receiving higher tax refunds thanks to the Working Families Tax Cut.

This law, which I proudly supported, is putting more hard-earned money back in people’s pockets.

Hoosier Producers Need Strong USMCA

Image

This week, I joined a bipartisan group of senators in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasizing support of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) ahead of its six-year joint review and urging expanded market access and certainty for American producers.

In our letter, we wrote:

The United States is currently the world’s largest agricultural exporter, with total agricultural exports valued at $176 billion in 2024. Since the Agreement’s entry-into-force, U.S. agricultural exports have increased substantially, particularly to Canada and Mexico. For many states, Canada and Mexico represent the largest and second-largest export markets. The market access achieved under USMCA is a critical component of the success of American agriculture and contributes to our secure food supply chain and to the global competitiveness of U.S. producers.

Restore Merit to College Admissions by Ending Legacy Preferences

Image

I joined with Edward Blum, the founder and president of Students for Fair Admissions, to write a column in National Review about why we should restore merit to college admissions by ending legacy preferences. We argue that Congress should act to remove higher education’s mechanisms that protect those already advantaged by wealth and birth.

If the federal government is going to attach conditions to grants, tax benefits, or other public support, legacy and donor preferences should be part of that discussion. At a minimum, we should insist on transparency. Institutions receiving federal funds ought to disclose how many applicants receive such preferences, the magnitude of the admissions advantage, and how those students compare academically to their peers.

Indiana Leading in Defense Innovation

 Image

Last week, I joined the Midwest Defense Innovation Summit in Indianapolis to highlight Indiana's leadership in developing defense technologies, like drones, and to discuss ways our state is supporting America's national security.

I also spoke about how my SHIPS for America Act will revitalize domestic shipbuilding here at home. Read more here.

ReElement Technologies in Fishers

Image

I toured ReElement Technologies in Fishers to learn more about how they are implementing cutting edge technologies to strengthen our domestic supply of critical minerals.

For years, China has leveraged its dominance of critical minerals by manipulating global markets and supply chains. Earlier this year, I introduced the Securing Essential and Critical U.S. Resources and Elements (SECURE) Minerals Act to create a new Strategic Resilience Reserve. This bill would counter China’s ongoing coercion and ensure the United States has a secure and accessible supply of the minerals that power our defense systems and high-tech industries. Creating this Reserve is a much-needed, aggressive step to protect our national and economic security

Indiana is a national leader in life sciences. Thousands of Hoosiers work in this industry and drive innovation through research and manufacturing.

I am honored to receive the Legislator of the Year Award from the Indiana life Sciences Association. I will continue to support the Hoosier workers in this industry and our state’s innovative leadership in life sciences.

American Leadership in Quantum Technology

This week, the Senate Commerce Committee passed my bill, the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act to help ensure American leadership in quantum. I am hopeful this bill will be considered by the full Senate soon.

Quantum technology and its applications, which promise to dramatically transform every industry and sector of our economy and revolutionize our technological capabilities, are vital to U.S. national security and our global economic competitiveness.

That’s why we need to ensure the United States prioritizes strategic investments into the development and deployment of the technology and ensure the U.S. obtains the talent and research capabilities required to lead the global tech competition and outcompete China.

The National Quantum Initiative does just that by strengthening the research and development investments and building a strong workforce which plays a critical role in safeguarding America’s economic and national security. This legislation, which reauthorizes the NQI, is critical to ensuring American leadership in quantum technology.

Notre Dame Symposium

It was a pleasure speaking at the University of Notre Dame's symposium on global affairs in Washington this week. I appreciated the opportunity to share my perspective and discuss how Notre Dame students, faculty, and alumni are contributing to our national security.

I also met with Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman and athletic director Pete Bevacqua to discuss NIL and ways to protect our college athletes. Go Irish!
