Hoosier Law Enforcement Deserves Our Support

Image

May 10–16 is National Police Week, and it is a useful reminder of what we owe our Indiana law enforcement officers and what more we can do for them. I am supporting The Protect and Serve Act to give federal prosecutors more tools to go after those who deliberately target law enforcement officers.

I had the pleasure of meeting with some Hoosier law enforcement officers in DC this week. Thank you to all the brave men and women across Indiana who protect our communities.

National Champs at the White House

You could hear IU fans chanting Hoo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoosiers at the White House on Monday afternoon. I joined with hundreds of IU fans to see Coach Cignetti and the national champion Hoosiers football team recognized by President Trump. Go IU!

America Must Out-Compete China on Trade, Technology, and Shipbuilding

Image

This week, I addressed The Ripon Society and spoke about trade policy, technology competition, and American industrial capacity. In my remarks, I described how we are in a strategic competition with China to lead the world in the development, deployment, and advancement of various technologies.

I also called for a revival of American shipbuilding — an industry hollowed out to a degree that most Americans do not appreciate. The loss of commercial shipbuilding capacity represents a strategic vulnerability. Last year, we built one ocean-going vessel. China has the capacity to build over a thousand in a given year.

Stand Up to China, Prioritize U.S. Shipbuilding

Image

I joined a group of Senate colleagues in sending a letter to President Donald Trump encouraging him to prioritize the U.S. shipbuilding industry and not to offer concessions to China during his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Over the last twenty years, China has become the dominant shipbuilding force globally through unfair trade practices, decimating the U.S. shipbuilding industry. This has hurt American workers, companies, and communities, and endangered our national security. Passing my
SHIPS for America Act would provide the resources needed to build American ships again.

Lugar Series Meeting

I enjoyed meeting with the outstanding women in The Lugar Series Class of 2025-2026. Their desire to serve Hoosiers is inspiring.

Protecting the Privacy of Charitable Donors

Image

Anonymous giving has long been a way for Americans to support philanthropic organizations that rely on generous charitable contributions. In recent years, donor privacy has been threatened on too many occasions.

I introduced the Protecting Charitable Giving Act with Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) to address the unlawful disclosure of data that identified donors who contribute to nonprofit organizations. This legislation would help nonprofit organizations better protect the identities of their donors by reinforcing existing privacy protections and increasing the penalties for disclosure of sensitive taxpayer data. The bill is supported by Philanthropy Roundtable, Americans for Prosperity, and Indiana Philanthropy Alliance.

Read more about this legislation here. See the full bill text here.

Hoosier Students with Semiconductor Student Alliance

Image

I enjoyed a virtual meeting with IU and Purdue students who are part of the Semiconductor Student Alliance. This nonprofit aims to make the semiconductor industry more accessible to all Indiana residents and explore how this technology can spur innovation and strengthen our national security.

Help for Hoosiers

Navigating federal agencies can be difficult. My staff and I are here to assist Hoosiers who are having trouble receiving benefits, have questions regarding a program or procedure, or have not heard back from these agencies in a timely manner.
