Secure America Act Signed into Law

Image

This week, President Trump signed the Secure America Act into law. This bill provides nearly $70 billion to fund U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the next three years. It also strengthens border security, supports federal law enforcement, invests in personnel and technology, and ensures funding for immigration enforcement operations.

I voted for the Secure America Act because it provides long-term funding for our law enforcement officers who are on the front lines of securing our border, combating drug trafficking, fighting human trafficking, and removing dangerous criminals from our communities. They perform difficult and essential work every day, and this legislation ensures they have the resources necessary to carry out their mission and keep Americans safe.

Drone Technology Supporting Hoosier Ag

Image

This week, I attended the Indiana Spray Drone Association Education Day at the Southeast Purdue Ag Center in Jennings County. The Indiana Spray Drone Association was created to help ensure aerial application by drone grows safely, professionally, and responsibly across the state.

Drones continue to be critical for the Hoosier ag industry, and Indiana’s new Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) test site will help ensure our drone ecosystem meets the industry’s growing needs.

Earlier this year, Indiana was named the recipient of a Federal Aviation Administration UAS Test Site. I led a letter in support of Indiana’s application signed by the entire Indiana congressional delegation. The full delegation support letter is available here

Democrats Should Support Critical Intel Program

Image

Over the next month, millions of Americans and international fans will travel to watch their teams compete, culminating in the final match in New Jersey on July 19. Appallingly, their safety and security may very well be in jeopardy if the unimaginable happens and Congressional Democrats permit a critical intelligence authority to lapse on Friday night simply over a temporary presidential appointment.

As a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, I have seen firsthand how critical Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is to keeping Americans safe. FISA 702 authorizes the United States intelligence community to gather intelligence against certain foreigners overseas through their electronic communications. As a foreign intelligence tool, the government is prohibited from using FISA 702 to target U.S. nationals or anyone in the United States.

Image

FISA 702 enabled the Intelligence Community to disrupt a terrorist attack against a Taylor Swift concert. This is just one example of how this critical tool saves lives.

Read my Washington Examiner column here on why this national security tool is important.

Expanding Apprenticeships in Indiana

Image

I joined Congressman Nathaniel Moran (R-TX-01) on 535 News to discuss our bill, the WAGES Act, which would make it easier for companies to grow from within and expand apprenticeship opportunities for Hoosiers.

Apprenticeships equip individuals with sustainable skills to advance their careers and offer employers job-ready workers, but too many businesses still face barriers to launching or scaling these programs. Our bill makes it easier for businesses to invest in high-quality apprenticeship programs and expand pathways to good-paying careers.
