Reagan Institute Summit on Education

I joined Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner at the Reagan Institute Summit on Education.

We discussed how Indiana is leading the way, including on school choice and civics, and how we can better prepare the next generation of Hoosiers with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing economy.

Meeting with Hoosier Drone Leaders in Bargersville

I joined local and industry leaders in Bargersville for a conversation on Indiana-made drones and my efforts to help our state secure a new designation as a federal drone testing site. With our strong defense industry, advanced manufacturing capabilities, innovative colleges and universities, and skilled Hoosier workforce, Indiana is ready to help unleash American drone dominance.

Hudson Institute Event

I joined Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) at the Hudson Institute to discuss the SHIPS for America Act and our efforts to restore America’s commercial shipbuilding industry to help deter Chinese aggression.

Preparing Hoosiers for the Workforce

This week, I met with Dr. Stacy Young, President of Manchester University, and Dr. Marty Pollio, President of Ivy Tech Community College.

Manchester has impressive workforce development programs and academic opportunities, and Ivy Tech is leading the way on Workforce Pell Grants, made possible by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act we passed last year. Ivy Tech’s eight-week medical assistant program is just the second in the nation approved for these new grants.

Both of these institutions are helping Hoosier students gain professional experience through innovative ways.

End Unfair Tax Burden on Sexual Assault Survivors

Survivors of sexual assault who have courageously sought justice should not face an additional, unfair burden from our tax code.

This week, I joined with Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) to introduce legislation that would eliminate an unfair tax burden on survivors of sexual assault. The Survivor Justice Tax Prevention Act would ensure that survivors of sexual abuse and unwanted and illegal sexual contact do not have to pay taxes on settlement income when they prevail legally against their abuser.

Under current law, the IRS requires sexual abuse survivors to provide evidence of an observable harm in order to receive tax-free treatment on their judgment or settlement income. However, injuries resulting from sexual assault are not always visible or may have healed by the time a settlement is reached. The Survivor Justice Tax Prevention Act would correct this unfair treatment. This common-sense change will provide greater fairness for survivors and ensure the tax code does not create another obstacle on the path to justice.

Jim Lancaster Named the CEO of New IU Initiative

Congratulations to Jim Lancaster on being named the CEO of the NSF IMPACT Engine in Indiana, an initiative that will build on the foundation and focus on the care and treatment of musculoskeletal health conditions. 

Indiana already leads the world in orthopedic manufacturing. Jim will bring decades of experience in the orthopedics industry to this Indiana University-led coalition and serve Hoosiers well.

Prioritizing Cancer Research

I appreciated the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Anthony Letai, Director of the National Cancer Institute, to discuss the importance of continued research and investment to develop first-in-class cancer treatments.

Under Dr. Letai’s leadership, the National Cancer Institute is prioritizing the research of innovative new ways to eradicate cancer, the development of new therapeutics to improve patient lives, and working to streamline clinical trials.
