We Need More American Scientists and Engineers

Image

We need to build a deeper bench of American scientists and engineers. To address this challenge, I have introduced the PHD Talent Act, which will create direct pathways for American students to earn Ph.D.’s in critical technology fields by supporting accelerated bachelor’s-to-doctoral programs.

This bill will also strengthen partnerships between universities, National Labs, and industry so students gain hands-on research experience and graduate ready to contribute to America’s innovation economy. Read my Washington Times column on why America’s technological future should be built by American talent.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act Passes Senate

Image

This week, the Senate passed the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act, legislation to reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) through 2030 to help protect and preserve the Great Lakes. I introduced the bill with Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) last year, and the bill unanimously passed out of the Senate.

The Great Lakes are an important part of Indiana’s ecosystem and economy, and I’m pleased the Senate has passed our bill to protect and preserve these lakes for generations to come. The GLRI is a results-driven program that addresses serious threats including pollution, debris, and invasive species.

The GLRI is the most significant investment ever made to restore and protect the Great Lakes. The GLRI combines federal and nonfederal efforts to stop the spread of carp and other invasive species, restore coastline and habitats connecting streams and rivers, clean up environmentally damaged Areas of Concern, and prevent future contamination. While providing vital support for these efforts, the GLRI also helps ensure we can address new and emerging threats to the Great Lakes.

I urge my colleagues in the House to pass this important bill before year’s end. Read more here.

We Need to Restore Trust in Congress

Image

Recent polling shows that 86% of Americans favor banning Members of Congress from trading stocks. Congressional stock trading damages public trust. The American people should not have to wonder whether votes in Congress are influenced by what is best for the country or by what is best for the investment portfolios of those serving in Congress. The Stop Insider Trading Act would fix this.

I am disappointed that once again Senate Democrats blocked a common-sense bill that would ensure that Congress plays by the same rules as everyone else. This bill should not be controversial.

Senate Passes Protect College Sports Act

Image

This week, the Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act, which will create national standards for student athletes’ Name, Image, and Likeness, including rules around transfers, eligibility, and protections for student athletes.

Hoosiers love college sports, and we want to continue rooting for our favorite schools and athletes for generations to come. This bill is an important step toward bringing clear and fair rules, long-term predictability, and needed protections for our students-athletes and institutions.

Over the past few months, I have pushed for reforms to this legislation to ensure the interests of all Indiana colleges and universities, including our two Big Ten schools, are represented. I am particularly grateful to Chairman Cruz and Ranking Member Cantwell for their collaborative approach and willingness to make changes to the bill to address concerns raised by the Big Ten. I support this legislation because I believe it is the right approach to protect the future of college sports.

The Global Biotech Race

Image

I joined Axios for a discussion on the global biotech race. China has made biotechnology a national priority for more than two decades. We need to ensure the next generation of biotech breakthroughs are invented, scaled, and manufactured in the United States, not by our adversaries.
