MEDIA ADVISORY: Scott to Respond to Obama Administration’s Surveying of Charleston Facility For Possible Relocation of
Gitmo Prisoners

Charleston, SC – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) will hold a media availability immediately following his meeting this afternoon with Obama Administration officials currently in Charleston surveying Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston.  During his meeting, he plans to again reiterate his call for an immediate halt to any plan to relocate dangerous international terrorists currently held in the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp in Cuba to any domestic sites on US soil.

The president announced that he would close Guantanamo Bay and the Department of Defense began conducting site surveys in the United States to look at options for places to house detainees.  The Consolidated Naval Brig in Charleston, Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, along with several other undisclosed facilities are under consideration by the Obama Administration.

Senator Scott has consistently opposed any plan to bring these dangerous terrorists to domestic sites.  As part of his efforts, last month, joined by five fellow members of the South Carolina congressional delegation, he wrote to President Obama to inform him that they were “prepared to use all possible means to keep terrorists in Guantanamo Bay and off American soil.”  He has also wrote pieces in the Wall Street Journal – with Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) – and the Post & Courier on the importance of stopping the president’s plan.
