SENATORS TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON GUANTANAMO BAY DETENTION FACILITY
Following congressional delegation visit to facility, Senators to discuss detention policies, court order restricting female guards

WASHINGTON, D.C. –
On Tuesday, October 27, Senators Tim Scott (R-SC), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) will hold a press conference to discuss their trip last week to Guantanamo and their efforts to ensure that the U.S. establishes a commonsense detention and interrogation policy aimed at keeping terrorists off the battlefield and gathering the intelligence needed to prevent future attacks.

Last Friday, the senators visited Guantanamo to meet with Joint Task Force Guantanamo leaders, review detention operations and their future at Guantanamo, visit with troops serving there, and better understand the impact of a court order that restricts women who guard certain detainees.  During their trip, they met with female guards and discussed the impact of a court order that is preventing them from performing fully their duties as guards for the “9/11 Five” after complaints from the terrorist detainees. The 9/11 Five, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, are charged with masterminding or facilitating the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks. Ayotte raised the issue in a March 2015 hearing with General John Kelly, the commander of Southern Command, and expressed concern that women service members were being prevented from performing fully their jobs and serving in the same capacity as their male counterparts.

During the trip, the senators also met with constituents from their respective states serving at Guantanamo.
