Tim
Scott
(R-SC), Kelly
Ayotte
(R-NH),
and
Shelley
Moore
Capito
(R-WV)
will
hold
a
press
conference
to
discuss
their
trip
last
week
to
Guantanamo
and
their
efforts
to
ensure
that
the
U.S.
establishes
a
commonsense
detention
and
interrogation
policy
aimed
at
keeping
terrorists
off
the
battlefield
and
gathering
the
intelligence
needed
to
prevent
future
attacks.
Last
Friday,
the
senators
visited
Guantanamo
to
meet
with
Joint
Task
Force
Guantanamo
leaders,
review
detention
operations
and
their
future
at
Guantanamo,
visit
with
troops
serving
there,
and
better
understand
the
impact
of
a
court
order
that
restricts
women
who
guard
certain
detainees.
During
their
trip,
they
met
with
female
guards
and
discussed
the
impact
of
a
court
order
that
is
preventing
them
from
performing
fully
their
duties
as
guards
for
the
“9/11
Five”
after
complaints
from
the
terrorist
detainees.
The
9/11
Five,
including
Khalid
Sheikh
Mohammed,
are
charged
with
masterminding
or
facilitating
the September
11th,
2001
terrorist
attacks.
Ayotte
raised
the
issue
in
a
March
2015 hearing with
General
John
Kelly,
the
commander
of
Southern
Command,
and
expressed
concern
that
women
service
members
were being
prevented
from
performing
fully
their
jobs
and
serving
in
the
same
capacity
as
their male
counterparts.
During
the
trip,
the
senators
also
met
with
constituents
from
their
respective
states
serving
at
Guantanamo.
