Dear Friends,

Our nation still faces huge challenges, like tackling the threat of ISIS, getting spending under control and protecting our constitutional rights.

Looking forward to 2016, I am working hard to ensure that we have a safer and brighter future.  I am truly blessed to serve our great state, and it is not an opportunity I take lightly.

WWII Veteran, Cpl. William B. Smoak
Today I joined the students at Nexton Elementary in Summerville to present World War II veteran Cpl. William Smoak with his Bronze Star and other service medals.

Cpl. Smoak's daughter reached out to my office for help, as her dad came down with malaria during the war and had never received his medals. I’m so glad we were able to play a part in ensuring he received the honors he earned while serving our nation with bravery and distinction.

IRS Accountability Act of 2015
I joined Senator Richard Burr to introduce the IRS Accountability Act, which will keep IRS bureaucrats accountable to the American people by giving the IRS Commissioner increased authority to fire senior executives who have failed in their performance or committed misconduct.

For too long the American people have been told there was nothing the IRS Commissioner could do to hold IRS employees who targeted conservative and religious organizations accountable for their actions. That’s not good enough for the American people and that’s not good enough for me.

I am committed to working with my colleagues to get all the answers about what happened at the IRS and preventing it from happening again, because Americans on all ends of the political spectrum need to be able to live without fear of being targeted by their own government for their political beliefs.

Another Reason to Keep Gitmo Open
Last week we learned that a former detainee at Guantanamo Bay, Ibrahim al-Qosi, has become a senior leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Al-Qosi, transferred from Guantanamo to his native Sudan in 2012, appears in a video released this week by AQAP that encourages small cell terror attacks in the West.

As the President rushes to transfer detainees out of Guantanamo Bay, we have been given a clear picture of exactly the type of terrorist he is talking about releasing.

These terrorists want another San Bernardino, another Paris, and by basing his national security policies on a political promise to close Guantanamo, I fear the President is only increasing the danger to our nation and our people.

Guantanamo is the perfect place to hold some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists, and any effort to close the facility and move the remaining detainees to domestic soil will be met with fierce opposition in Congress and among the American people.

God Bless,

Tim
