SC National Guard’s 131st Military Police Co. is Deploying to Guantanamo Bay

Last week, it was confirmed that SC National Guard’s 131st Military Police Co., based in Beaufort, will deploy to Cuba to join the Joint Task Force Guantanamo, which is responsible for housing detained enemy combatants as well as supporting law enforcement and war crimes investigations.

I am proud that SC National Guard’s 131st Military Police Company has been an important part of our national security operations since 2010 and have supported critical missions around the world, including those in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Instead of President Obama’s reckless and ill-conceived plan to bring dangerous terrorists to South Carolina, some of South Carolina’s finest are bringing themselves to the terrorists in Gitmo to help continue to keep all Americans safe.

Our community can take great pride in the 131st's service to our country. These brave men and women and their families are in our prayers as they prepare to take on this new task.  Having visited the Guantanamo facility last October, I know that this unit will join men and women consistently doing a fantastic job in the face of so much adversity from detainees.  While there, I learned of the over 250 assaults made against guards with not one single retaliation. I look forward to their safe return to South Carolina after their mission is complete.

Spreading the Message of Opportunity

This past Friday, I had the chance to visit two schools in the Midlands: North Middle/High School and Midlands Middle College (a Charter High School). At both schools I took questions from students about my life and how my experiences led me to developing my Opportunity Agenda.

It was heartening to see that the students that I spoke with have goals and dreams, and they are not letting anyone or anything sidetrack them. My message to the students was that no matter what their expectations are, they should double them because the best is yet to come.

National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer was last week, and it gave me the opportunity to think of the foundation our nation was built on, our Judeo-Christian Heritage, and thank the Lord for blessing me with living in America. We are all very fortunate to live in a nation that allows religious freedom and does not persecute believers or non-believers.

I thank the Lord every day for giving me the opportunity to make a difference in this wonderful country and look to him for guidance in any future endeavors that I may take on. I filmed a quick video on the day itself, if you’re interested please click here!

Sincerely,

Tim
