Tragedy in Orlando

This weekend, we unfortunately were faced once again with what happens when someone is overwhelmed by hate. The atrocity in Orlando has left Florida and our nation in shock, and I know that over the next few days we will come together and show the world that America stands as one against terror and those who would do us harm. I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of those killed and injured; while you are facing unimaginable pain today, we all stand ready to lift you up.

ISIS and Islamic terror groups and fighters around the globe- their senseless acts, driven by their misguided and heartless belief in a bloody, global jihad, will not defeat us. They are only strengthening our resolve, sturdying our footing, and sealing their own fate.

Gitmo

This past Tuesday, President Obama threatened to veto the defense bill currently being debated in the Senate – a bill that includes a provision to ensure the Obama administration cannot transfer prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to the United States.

Since then, we have learned that 12 detainees released from Guantanamo Bay returned to terror, and were responsible for attacks on and the deaths of Americans in Afghanistan. The fact these former detainees returned to the fight truly shows the danger of rushing to close the Guantanamo Bay Facility, and it is why I support the banning of ALL detainee transfers from Guantanamo Bay.

Opportunity for All

The best way to help our fellow Americans is to give them the tools to help themselves. My Opportunity Agenda is based on helping low-income and middle class Americans find the opportunities they are looking for to take care of their families and build a stronger future. The foundation of my agenda is based on education, job skills and (private) community investment. It is my belief that if we give people the chance to get a good education or learn a job skill, we can change not only their lives, but build a brighter future for our whole nation.

You can read more about my Opportunity Agenda here.

Sincerely,

Tim
