Dear Friends,

A Tragic Week

This has been an incredibly trying, tragic week for our entire nation. Seven families are mourning the loss of their loved ones, and our country feels like it is fraying. It is clear that we must have tough conversations. We must put ourselves in each other’s shoes.

We also know that reacting to violence with violence will only lead to more heartache. As Dr. Martin Luther King Junior said, “returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.”

We cannot, will not, let hate win. We have bridges to cross, but we cannot allow madmen to widen the divide.

Desert Shield and Desert Storm Honor Ceremonies

The men and women who have served in our armed forces deserve to be recognized for their willingness to defend our country against those who would harm us. On August 27th, I will host Desert Shield and Desert Storm Honor Ceremonies in Greenville and Charleston. Since being elected to federal office, I have hosted several honor ceremonies for South Carolina’s veterans in an effort to show appreciation for all that they and their families have sacrificed. In 2012, World War Two veterans were honored, in 2013, I held two ceremonies celebrating our Korean War era veterans, and in 2014, our Vietnam War era veterans were honored.

Each veteran will receive a special Senatorial Certificate of Appreciation, as well as a pin. All interested veterans should register with my office by visiting scott.senate.gov/veterans.

Academy Nominations Deadline Thursday, October 13th

I am accepting applications for Service Academy Nominations through Thursday, October 13th at 5PM. High school students interested in attending one of the four service academies – U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, or U.S. Merchant Marine Academy– are all encouraged to submit applications and other necessary documents.

For more information about the Service Academy nomination process, click HERE or call the Service Academy Coordinator at (803) 771-6112. During the last academic year, I nominated 51 students from across South Carolina to be considered for an appointment to one of the four service academies for the class of 2020.

Sincerely,

Tim
