Remembering
Those
Who
Serve
This
past Sunday,
we
saw
a
horrific
attack
on
law
enforcement
in
Baton
Rouge,
Louisiana.
My
prayers
are
with
the
families
of
the
three
officers
who
were
killed,
especially
their
young
children.
I’ll
be
clear
these
attacks
on
law
enforcement
officers
must
stop.
These
men
and
women
run
towards
danger
every
single
day
to
protect
us.
Last
week
on
the
Senate
floor,
I
gave
a
series
of
three
speeches
focused
on
the
path
forward
for
our
nation. I
spoke
on
the
importance
of
supporting
our
law
enforcement
officers,
my perspective
on
the
issue
as
an
American
who
is
black,
and
on
the solutions
we
must
work
towards
to
build
a
better
America.
Making
Opportunity
a
Reality
Last
week,
the
Senate
passed
the
Housing
Opportunity
Through
Modernization
Act
(HOTMA),
a
bill
introduced
by
myself,
Robert
Menendez
(D-NJ)
and
a
few
other
colleagues.
The
act
focuses
on
instituting
federal
reforms
that
will
improve
families’
access
to
high-opportunity
areas
and
quality
of
life
while
cutting
overall
program
costs.
It
expands
access
to
higher
opportunity
areas
by
allowing
recipients
to
use
housing
vouchers
to
move
to
areas
with
less
poverty
and
less
crime.
It
will
also
minimize
homelessness
by
creating
more
vacancies
in
“project-based”
housing,
and
will
strengthen
work
incentives
by
delaying
rent
increases
for
tenants
who
start
employment
or
whose
earnings
rise
because
they
get
better
paying
jobs.
My
life’s
mission
is
to
provide
opportunity
to
all
Americans
so
that
they
may
improve
their
lives
through
hard
work
and
dedication.
I
believe
that
this
is
a
step
in
the
right
direction.
Desert
Shield
and
Desert
Storm
Honor
Ceremonies
The
men
and
women
who
have
served
in
our
armed
forces
deserve
to
be
recognized
for
their
willingness
to
defend
our
country
against
those
who
would
harm
us.
On
August
27th,
I
will
host
Desert
Shield
and
Desert
Storm
Honor
Ceremonies
in
Greenville
and
Charleston.
Since
being
elected
to
federal
office,
I
have
hosted
several
honor
ceremonies
for
South
Carolina’s
veterans
in
an
effort
to
show
appreciation
for
all
that
they
and
their
families
have
sacrificed.
In
2012,
World
War
Two
veterans
were
honored,
in
2013,
I
held
two
ceremonies
celebrating
our
Korean
War
era
veterans,
and
in
2014,
our
Vietnam
War
era
veterans
were
honored.
Each
veteran
will
receive
a
special
Senatorial
Certificate
of
Appreciation,
as
well
as
a
pin.
All
interested
veterans
should
register
with
my
office
by
visiting
scott.senate.gov/veterans
or
calling
844-872-7626.
