Let’s Unclench our Fists, and Join Hands

I wrote a column for USA Today about how our nation needs to have a painful, productive conversation on race. But, and I cannot say this any more clearly, killing, injuring or otherwise targeting our law enforcement officers is absolutely unacceptable, and those who do so must face swift justice. We know that the vast majority of our nation’s law enforcement officers are honest, hardworking men and women looking to only do two things: serve and protect.

As we move forward through this trying time, it is imperative that we not lose sight of our goal to create a nation where everyone is treated equally. The only way we can do that is to not disparage others, but to treat them with respect. There is no doubt in my mind that we will get through this as a nation, stronger than we were before.

Internships Available!

I am accepting applications for congressional internships in my Washington, DC, North Charleston, Columbia and Greenville offices for the Fall of 2016. The intern program is open to undergraduate and graduate students who have a strong interest in public service, government and press. The program provides students with valuable work experience and an opportunity to work with professionals in legislative, constituent service, and press roles.

Internship hours are flexible to accommodate students' course schedules, but generally run 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Interested South Carolina students should contact the internship coordinator at internships@scott.senate.gov or (202) 224-6121.

Honoring Our Desert Shield and Desert Storm Veterans

The men and women who have served in our armed forces deserve to be recognized for their willingness to defend our country against those who would harm us. On August 27th, I will host Desert Shield and Desert Storm Honor Ceremonies in Greenville and Charleston. Since being elected to federal office, I have hosted several honor ceremonies for South Carolina’s veterans in an effort to show appreciation for all that they and their families have sacrificed. In 2012, World War Two veterans were honored, in 2013, I held two ceremonies celebrating our Korean War era veterans, and in 2014,  our Vietnam War era veterans were honored.

Each veteran will receive a special Senatorial Certificate of Appreciation, as well as a pin. All interested veterans should register with my office by visiting scott.senate.gov/veterans or calling 844-872-7626.
