Attacks in Minnesota, New Jersey and New York

I am certainly thankful that no innocent loss of life occurred due to these heinous attacks this weekend, and my heart and prayers remain with those injured and their families.

With ISIS claiming responsibility for stabbings in Minnesota, and authorities detaining a person of interest related to multiple bombs placed around New York and New Jersey, it is clearer than ever that we must remain vigilant in the fight against those who seek to harm us. I offer my sincerest thanks and gratitude to our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line this weekend, today and every day to protect us all.

Defeating ISIS and groups who share similar goals is absolutely essential to keeping our nation and our people safe, and I will continue working to ensure we are doing everything possible to do so.

Keep Terrorists in Gitmo

Last week, President Obama’s Director of National Intelligence admitted that more Gitmo detainees have rejoined Islamic militant groups. Despite this fact, the President continues to push for the closure of Gitmo and in essence, the endangerment of American citizens. I applaud my colleagues in the House of Representatives for passing H.R. 5351, which prohibits the transfer of any detainee held at Guantanamo Bay.

Without a doubt, Gitmo is the only secure place for us to house the worst criminals in the world, which is why I worked with Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) to introduce the companion bill in the Senate (S. 2999). I refuse to let Americans to be put unnecessarily at risk and will continue to fight to keep Gitmo open.

Deepening of the Port of Charleston

In South Carolina, 1 out of 11 jobs is connected to the port and its prosperity. Understandably, as ships evolve and get bigger, we must find ways to ensure that our port is able to accommodate them. In order to guarantee that our port stays at the forefront of progress, I voted for the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), which includes authorization for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project.

The bill now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives for a vote, where I hope it will pass.

Proud to be a Conservative!

I am proud to receive the Conservative Excellence Award from the American Conservative Union for the 3rd consecutive year today. I genuinely believe conservative solutions will bring real change to America, and I will continue fighting for conservative policies that will ultimately help grow our economy, create jobs, and protect the liberties granted to every American by our Constitution.

Sincerely,

Tim
