WTAS: GOP Senators Launch Senate Opportunity Coalition
Scott, Ernst, Lankford, Rubio, and Sullivan come together to fight poverty

Yahoo News!: Republicans don’t often talk about poverty, and they strategize even less about how to address it. This group, which is Scott’s brainchild, aims to change that. Scott says that despite the exclusivity of the group, including only Republicans, this isn’t a branding effort. “I’m not here to make the Republican Party stronger,” he says. “I’m here to make the country stronger.” (‘Tim Scott rounds up GOP senators to focus on poverty’, National)

McClatchy DC: “Named theSenate Opportunity Coalition, the group will focus on reaching out to families living in distressed communities to see what works, and what doesn’t. Though well-intentioned, most previous “cookie cutter approaches” to fight poverty have not accomplished their goals, Scott said.” (Sen. Tim Scott: It’s time to stop talking about poverty – and listen’ DC)

Roll Call"I think our goal initially is to ensure that the conservative movement, those of us who believe in limited government and free enterprise, have answers and ideas with regard to this issue and that it’s being coordinated in that way,” Rubio said.” (GOP Senators launch poverty focus group, DC)

Post and Courier, South Carolina: “… South Carolina Republican formally unveiled his new “Senate Opportunity Coalition,” a group of five Republicans he’s brought together who share the same interest in promoting a kinder, gentler party often criticized for speaking past the problem with dispassionate graphs, charts and numbers.(‘Scott expands his ‘Opportunity Agenda’ with ‘Opportunity Coalition’, South Carolina)

107.3 KIOW: We are not looking at numbers, but instead meeting with people. Instead of waiting to talk, we are eager to listen. We look to take the lessons learned by those on the ground, grinding out the best living they can, and use those to power a new kind of solution…a brighter, more prosperous future. (Senators launch Senate Opportunity Coalition, Iowa)

The Norman Transcript: ““The fact of the matter is that the American Dream is not reaching everyone. For decades, government has been primarily focused on treating the symptoms of poverty. Our policy approach should focus more on actually reducing and eliminating barriers to upward mobility.” (Senator Lankford joins group to launch anti-poverty effort, Oklahoma)

News 13 TVTV“In a state with abundant natural resources, it’s tragic that there are areas in Alaska that have some of the highest costs of living in the nation, and highest rates of poverty” (Senator Sullivan helps launch coalition, Alaska)
