National School Choice Week
Today marks the beginning of National School Choice Week, which runs from January 23rd-27th. This week celebrates parents, teachers and administrators who work hard each and every day to make sure that our children receive a quality education regardless of their zip code.

To kick-off National School Choice Week, I spent the morning with very talented kids at Charleston Charter School for Math and Science this morning. I spoke with the students, answered a few questions and shared my belief that all things are possible with a great education.

It is critical to our children’s future that we create an education system that is tailored to fit their learning needs. I will continue to lend my voice in the fight to promote school choice across the nation.

Charleston Harbor Deepening Project
Today, I also visited the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project. During my visit, I participated in a roundtable discussion with members of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation and state and port officials. The Port is vital to our state’s economic future, and I am proud to say that I worked with Senator Graham last year to ensure the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project was authorized as part of the Senate WRDA bill.

Welcoming the New Administration
Last week, I had the honor of witnessing history-the peaceful transition of power from one world leader to another. Our new administration ushered in an era of hope and anticipation for the American people. I look forward to working with President Trump and Vice President Pence on meaningful legislation that will improve the lives of Americans across the nation.

I also joined Fox News last week to discuss our upcoming votes on cabinet picks and the new administration. You can watch here.

My focus will be on my Opportunity Agenda. My goal is to make sure those Americans who are struggling understand that the government is listening and they are our bosses. I am confident that our best years are ahead of us.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Defense Secretary Confirmed
On Friday, after the President and Vice President were sworn in, I voted in support of General James Mattis for Secretary of Defense. He was confirmed 98-1.

During such volatile times with global terror attacks on the rise, it is important that we have the most qualified and experienced person leading our Department of Defense. It is for that reason that I fully support Gen. Mattis’s nomination.

Throughout his 44-year Marine Corps career he has seen every level of command, been on the frontlines, and led Marines both on and off the battlefield. Gen. Mattis has been involved in every major operation in our nation’s modern history, and is considered a counterinsurgency expert. He possesses real life experience that gives him unique insight into handling some of the most sensitive and problematic areas in the world. We are living through uncertain times, and I believe General Mattis is the right choice to take on such a demanding role.

We also confirmed General John Kelly for DHS Secretary Friday evening. In a time when Americans fear another domestic terror attack, we need a person heading our Department of Homeland Security who understands the importance of national security, counterterrorism, and immigration enforcement. General John Kelly has proven he possesses the experience and knowledge needed to take on such a critical role on the administration.

During his extensive 40-year Marine Corps career, Gen. Kelly has spent time in Europe and in the Middle East planning missions and operations designed to fight terrorism abroad. Additionally, while serving as the head of U.S. Southern Command, he was able to gain a unique understanding of the immigration challenges we face at our Southern border. As government leaders, we need to work on protecting the safety of our citizens first and foremost. I am confident Gen. Kelly will make that his top priority.

I am looking forward to supporting the confirmation of Mike Pompeo for CIA Director this evening.

Thanks again for subscribing!

Sincerely,

Tim
