Dear Friends,

Thank you for subscribing to my weekly e-newsletter, and please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

Syria Missile Strike

The United States’ response to the atrocities of last week should be a surprise to no one. The gut-wrenching photos of children gasping for breath and the families grieving over loved ones warranted a military response of equal proportions. Last week it was confirmed that a chemical attack carried out by the Assad regime brutally killed nearly 100 people, 27 of them children. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has been done. Despite a standing agreement banning the use of chemical weapons, Assad has violated the guidelines time and time again.

Thank you to the brave men and women in uniform for carrying out this justified and calculated attack on a military target. Our actions should send a clear message that barbaric attacks against humanity will not be tolerated. We must continue to develop a comprehensive strategy moving forward.

Voted to confirm Justice Neil Gorsuch

Last week, I voted in favor of instituting the so-called ‘nuclear option’ in order to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to take over ninth seat on the Supreme Court. It was not a decision I made lightly. It required us to change long-standing Senate rules. However, it was also clear to me that this decision was a necessity. Judge Neil Gorsuch is an outstanding nominee and one of the brightest judicial minds our country has to offer. I spoke on the Senate floor in support of Judge Neil Gorsuch, which you can view here.

Congratulations to the newly appointed Justice Gorsuch! I know you will serve our country well.

Stopping IRS Overreach

A nearly two year Congressional investigation found that the IRS has taken advantage of their civil forfeiture authority by seizing and refusing to return assets to law-abiding citizens. It is my belief that government entities should not be allowed to seize Americans' property without first meeting a set burden of proof.

In order to curb this abuse of authority, I introduced the Restraining Excessive Seizure of Property through Exploitation of Civil Asset Forfeiture Tools (RESPECT) Act. You can read more about the RESPECT Act here.

Honoring Baseball Legend Larry Doby

Last week I joined several of my colleagues in introducing legislation to honor Camden native Larry Doby, the first African-American to play in the American League, with the Congressional Gold Medal for his career and contributions to the American civil rights movement.

In joining the American League, Doby effectively integrated all of professional baseball. This year is the 70th Anniversary of Doby’s debut with the Cleveland Indians in 1947. You can read more about the bill here.

Congrats Lady Gamecocks!

For the first time in program history, the University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team won a national championship. Senator Lindsey Graham and I introduced a joint resolution to make the Lady Gamecocks’ victory a part of the congressional record.

You can check out the clip of our speech here.

Sincerely,

Tim
