Forum
on
Politics
and
Policy
Last
week,
Congressman
Trey
Gowdy
and
I
had
the
pleasure
of
participating
in
the
final
installment
of
Winthrop
University’s Palmetto
Focus:
A
Series
on
the
Issues
in
South
Carolina.
The
event
was
hosted
by
the
John
C.
West
Forum
on
Politics
and
Policy,
which
is
committed
to
promoting
civic
engagement
and
raising
issues
important
to
South
Carolinians.
This
installment
at
Winthrop
University
centered
on
race
and
economic
opportunity.
We
were
able
to
answer
several
questions
from
the
audience
and
explain
our
respective
stances
on
a
variety
of
issues.
One
of
the
bills
I
discussed
was
my Investing
in
Opportunity
Act,
which
I
believe
has
the
potential
to
lift
many
Americans
out
of
poverty.
The
legislation
seeks
to
help
many
folks
living
paycheck-to-paycheck,
and
will
reinvest
private
sector
dollars
back
into
helping
everyday
Americans
improve
their
quality
of
life.
Our
most
vulnerable
communities
across
the
country
lack
opportunities,
investment
potential,
and
tangible
growth.
Businesses
are
closing
and
we
are
facing
a
shortage
of
entrepreneurs.
We
want
to
revolutionize
how
we
help
some
of
our
most
financially
distressed
neighborhoods
and
this
bill
will
put
us
on
the
right
path.
School
Choice
for
Military
Families
I
believe
education
is
the
closest
thing
to
magic.
My
CHOICE
Act
seeks
to
let
parents
of
children
with
special
needs,
military
families,
and
low-income
households
decide
what’s
best
for
their
individual
child’s
needs.
I
have
personally
experienced
the
power
of
education
in
my
life,
and
I
am
confident
if
our
most
vulnerable
children
see
the
light,
they
will
move
in
that
direction
and
that
is
good
news
for
kids
who
grew
up
like
me.
Last
week,
I
was
interviewed
by
Denisha
Merriweather
about
school
choice.
Denisha
is
a
beneficiary
of
school
choice
and
attributes
much
of
her
success
to
the
Florida
Tax
Credit
Scholarship
program,
which
allowed
her
to
get
a
quality
education.
You
can
listen
to
me
explain
my
stance
on
School
Choice here.
Ashley
Ridge
High
School
Each
month,
I
make
it
a
priority
to
visit
one
school
in
South
Carolina
and
talk
to
students
about
what
I
have
learned
throughout
my
life.
The
students’
enthusiasm
for
life
and
their
drive
to
succeed
never
ceases
to
amaze
me.
Last
week,
I
was
afforded
the
opportunity
to
visit
a
12th
grade
American
Government
class
at
Ashley
Ridge
High
School
in
Summerville.
The
seniors
were
eager
to
learn
about
what
is
going
on
in
our
government
today
and
what
they
could
do
to
make
a
difference.
Their
obvious
concern
for
our
country’s
future
only
reinforced
my
belief
that
our
future
is
in
good
hands.
Sincerely,

Tim
