Washington,
D.C.
As
a
fervent
supporter
of
school
choice,
Sen.
Scott
joined
several of
his
colleagues
this
week
to
send
a
letter
to
the
Senate
Appropriations
Subcommittee
on
Labor,
Health
and
Human
Services,
Education,
and
Related
Agencies
requesting
they
continue
to
support
the
Charter
School
Program.
Charters
schools
have
served
as
successful
educational
institutions
for
millions
of
students,
especially
for
minorities
and
children
who
come
from
financially
challenged
households.
As
it
is
noted
in
the
letter,
during
the
2016-2017
school
year
public
charter
schools
educated
more
than
3.1
million
students
in
over
6,900
schools,
and
over
half
of
the
students
were
eligible
for
free
or
reduced-price
lunches.
Numerous
studies
have
also
proven
the
success
children
and
families
have
found
by
choosing
charter
schools.
A
2015
report
by
the
Center
for
Research
on
Education
Outcomes
at
Stanford
University
showed
charter
schools
in
our
nation’s
largest
urban
cities
have
resulted
in
substantial
performance
improvements
for
the
most
at-risk
students.
In
the
letter,
the
senators
wrote:
“Charter
schools
have
allowed
parents
to
choose
a
high-quality
educational
environment
for
their
child
regardless
of
income
or
geographic
location.
The
unique
educational
experiences
many
charter
schools
provide
help
level
the
playing
field
and
ensure
more
children
have
a
chance
to
achieve
the
American
dream.”
