National Opportunity Tour Launch

On Friday, I launched my National Opportunity Tour in my hometown of North Charleston. My Opportunity Tour will take me around the country, meeting with local and state leaders, to find innovative solutions to fight poverty and bring opportunity back to distressed communities. The lessons learned on the tour will help power the next iteration of my Opportunity Agenda, half of which has now been signed into law over the past few years.

It was wonderful to tour the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood of North Charleston with Metanoia and community leaders, who all highlighted that there are truly so many awesome ideas and initiatives in our local communities fighting poverty and creating opportunity.

I believe that regardless of background, upbringing or socioeconomic status, every American should enjoy unimpeded access to opportunity, and to be able to climb their way to a more fruitful tomorrow. You can read more about my Opportunity Tour here.

Supporting SC Families

This morning I joined actress Jennifer Garner, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and other colleagues to discuss the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program. In South Carolina, MIECHV funds are used to implement several home visiting models, including the Nurse-Family Partnership.

It was heartening to hear about Ms. Garner’s great work in helping some of our high potential families and youth gain access to resources they need to ensure our children have a brighter future. The path to prosperity is paved during one’s childhood, and I always enjoy discussing initiatives like MIECHV that help to strengthen the foundation of so many of our families in South Carolina and across the country.

I have long supported the MIECHV Program, which was designed to help pregnant women and families—particularly those considered at-risk—with the resources and skills necessary to raise children who are healthy and ready to learn. MIECHV was recently reauthorized for 5 years in the Bipartisan Budget Agreement of 2018, which I voted in support of earlier this year.

Secretary of State and CIA Director Announcements

Today I released several statements regarding President Trump’s announcements of a new Secretary of State and CIA Director. I first want to thank former Secretary Mr. Tillerson for his service to our nation. Secretary of State is a particularly demanding position, and he represented our nation well both abroad and in his efforts to modernize the department here at home. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

I served with current Secretary of State Nominee Mike Pompeo in Congress, and I know how committed he is to ensuring our nation has a clear and strong foreign policy. With many threats looming, as well as potential direct talks with North Korea, I look forward to hearing more about his plans for the State Department and representing our nation as our top diplomat as his nomination moves through the Senate.

CIA Director Nominee Gina Haspel is certainly a qualified candidate, with more than 30 years of service at the CIA including as Deputy Director. We live in a dangerous world, and I am interested to hear more about how she will combat the threats facing our nation every single day.

Sincerely,

Tim
