Washington-
U.S.
Senator
Tim
Scott
(R-SC)
released
the
statement
below
after
voting
for
the
Stop
Enabling
Sex
Traffickers
Act
(SESTA)
this
afternoon.
This
legislation
clarifies
section
230
of
the
Communications
Decency
Act
to
ensure
that
websites
are
not
provided
legal
protection
when
knowingly
facilitating
sex
trafficking.
“We
must
do
everything
possible
to
stop
sex
trafficking,
especially
with
studies
showing
an
846
percent
increase
in
reports
of
suspected
child
sex
trafficking
from
2010-2015.
In
an
increasingly
technology-driven
world,
bad
actors
consistently
find
new
ways
to
carry
out
their
terrible
acts,
and
we
have
to
ensure
our
laws
keep
up.
SESTA
will
close
a
loophole
that
has
allowed
websites
to
knowingly
facilitate
sex
trafficking
and
then
evade
responsibility.
We
will
continue
working
to
stop
the
evils
of
sex
and
human
trafficking,
and
I
am
pleased
the
Senate
passed
this
important
legislation
today.”
