SC
Opportunity
Zones
It
was
a
great
day
for
South
Carolina
on
Friday,
as
Governor
McMaster
announced
our
state's
Opportunity
Zones
-
part
of
the
implementation
process
of
my
Investing
in
Opportunity
Act.
This
means
tens
of
thousands
of
folks
across
every
one
of
our
counties
will
see
a
brighter
future
due
to
a
stronger
local
economy,
a
surge
in
job
growth,
and
the
potential
revitalization
of
entire
neighborhoods.
I
especially
want
to
thank
Gov.
McMaster
and
his
team
for
their
diligent
and
balanced
approach
to
selecting
areas
that
include
both
our
urban
and
rural
communities,
and
hit
a
near-perfect
balance
of
demographical
representation.
This
is
exciting
news
from
the
coast
to
Sumter
to
the
Upstate,
and
I
can't
wait
to
see
all
of
the
good
things
that
are
in
store
for
our
most
promising
communities.
You

this
exciting
news

SESTA
Last
Wednesday,
I
voted
for
the
Stop
Enabling
Sex
Traffickers
Act
(SESTA),
which
will
help
to
ensure
that
websites
are
not
provided
legal
protection
when
knowingly
facilitating
sex
trafficking.
In
an
increasingly
technology-driven
world,
bad
actors
consistently
find
new
ways
to
carry
out
their
terrible
acts,
and
we
have
to
ensure
our
laws
keep
up.
SESTA
will
close
a
loophole
that
has
allowed
websites
to
knowingly
facilitate
sex
trafficking
and
then
evade
responsibility.
We
will
continue
working
to
stop
the
evils
of
sex
and
human
trafficking,
and
I
am
pleased
the
Senate
passed
this
important
legislation
last
week.
HBCU
STEAM
Day
of
Action
It
was
great
to
join
the
HBCU
STEAM
Day
of
Action
last
Tuesday,
hosted
by
the
HBCU
Caucus.
I
participated
in
a
segment
with
HELP
Committee
Chairman
Senator
Alexander
where
I
spoke
about
the
good
work
our
HBCUs
continue
to
do,
and
the
importance
of
creating
opportunity
for
their
graduates.
I
also
spoke
about
my
Investing
in
Opportunity
Act,
and
how
it
will
positively
impact
some
of
the
economically
challenged
communities
where
some
HBCUs
are
located.
I
want
to
thank
all
of
the
HBCU
leadership
in
attendance-
your
guidance
and
feedback
will
continue
to
generate
incredible
progress
that
will
mean
results
for
our
students.

Around
the
State
I
was
honored
to
attend
the
commissioning
of
the
USS
Ralph
H.
Johnson
last
Saturday
in
Charleston-
named
after
Marine
Pfc.
Ralph
H.
Johnson,
a
Charleston
native
and
recipient
of
the
Medal
of
Honor.
Ralph
was
a
Marine
killed
in
Vietnam
after
he
jumped
on
a
grenade
to
save
his
fellow
Marines.
It
was
touching
to
see
all
of
the
people,
especially
fellow
veterans,
remembering
and
honoring
Ralph’s
bravery
and
heroism,
and
I
am
hopeful
that
the
USS
Ralph
Johnson
will
carry
on his
legacy
through
generations
to
come.

Sincerely,

Tim
