NDAA Conference Committee

Last week, I was honored to be named to the Conference Committee for the National Defense Authorization Act. South Carolinians know that our nation’s men and women in uniform are our greatest asset—and should be treated as such. As the newest member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I have been privileged to weigh in on the most important discussions about funding our nation’s military and the policies that govern it. I am excited to be at the table with my colleagues, in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, advocating on behalf of South Carolina and our broader national security interests.

I have also been blessed to be on the Senate Banking Committee, which put me in a position to sponsor the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA) in the NDAA. FIRRMA is a key piece of national security legislation that will give the Trump Administration a set of new tools to ensure that American intellectual property and proprietary technology never fall into the hands of nefarious foreign actors that wish to harm us.

Our national security and South Carolina's wellbeing, have been, and will always be one of my top priorities in Washington. I look forward to working with my colleagues to make sure our military continues to the best in the world. You can read my full statement here.

IRS Accountability Act of 2018

On Thursday, I helped to introduce the IRS Accountability Act of 2018, which gives the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner the authority to fire senior officials for misconduct and poor performance. As a former small business owner, I know employees across the country give their all every day to support their families, and the same should certainly be expected in the federal government.

The IRS Accountability Act, of which I am an original cosponsor, ensures that the IRS functions like the rest of American offices—if you fail to properly execute your duties, you’re out. Furthermore, it allows the IRS Commissioner to discharge any and all high-level employees, including Senior Executive Service, when they don’t meet expectations. We need to rebuild the trust Americans have lost in their government. You can read the full statement here.

Fall 2018 Internships Application Open

I am now accepting congressional internship applications for available positions in my Washington DC, North Charleston, Columbia and Greenville offices for the fall of 2018. The internship program offers undergraduate and graduate students practical experience in constituent services, the legislative process, government policy, and press. The internship provides students with the ability to work with and learn from public service professionals, as well as gain a better understanding of how their government functions. Interested South Carolina students should contact the internship coordinator at internships@scott.senate.gov or (202) 224-6121.

Sincerely,

Tim
