WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) will join U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) for a stop on his national Opportunity Tour with visits to Des Moines and West Des Moines on Friday, July 20, 2018.
Sens. Scott and Ernst will first visit the nonprofit Des Moines Dream Center for a discussion about their work to address immediate and long-term needs in the areas of homelessness, youth development, poverty and outreach. Lead Pastor Jamel Crawford will facilitate a discussion with families.
Sens. Scott and Ernst will also be stopping in West Des Moines to visit the Phenix School Apartments where they will be led on a tour by the Chief Operating Officer of Community Housing Initiatives Sam Erickson and learn about the mixed-income apartment building for artists currently under construction in the West Des Moines historic Valley Junction neighborhood. The Senators will also participate in a roundtable discussion with local business owners and residents.

Background:
Iowa’s Opportunity Zones were proposed by Governor Kim Reynolds and approved in May 2018 by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Senators will discuss the Investing In Opportunity Act (IIOA), which Sen. Scott secured as part of last year’s tax reform package and Sen. Ernst strongly supported, as well as additional innovative, local-led initiatives to help bring opportunity to the local Iowa communities that need it most without relying on government funding.
