Opportunity Zones & The Opportunity Zone Summit
On Friday, I joined South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, local business owners, and community leaders at the S.C. Department of Commerce for a summit to discuss how we can maximize the positive impact of the Palmetto State’s 135 Opportunity Zones. I was so happy to see the excitement over the program in people from all over our state, and look forward to seeing the investments and economic activity Opportunity Zone projects will create in 2019 and beyond.

CHOICE Act
Last week, in conjunction with National School Choice Week and my America 2030 agenda, I introduced the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Individuals and Communities Through Education Act (CHOICE Act). The CHOICE Act would give military families, families of students with disabilities, and low-income students in Washington, D.C.—together totaling more than 6.2 million students nationwide—access to greater educational opportunity.

In every county, across every zip-code, in every state, access to quality education is the greatest gift we can pass down to the next generation. At the end of the day, it is free thought and a hunger for learning that can never be taken away from a child.

As a part of my America 2030 agenda, I am proud to introduce a school-choice bill which ensures that our children, military families, and low-income students are fully equipped to enter the workforce and become productive members of society. I look forward to seeing the CHOICE Act passed and implemented to enrich the lives of millions of students across the country.

Government Shutdown Ends
On Friday, President Trump agreed to re-open the federal government for three weeks, ending the shutdown. I’m glad that today, furloughed employees will return to work and begin receiving their paychecks soon. I look forward to continuing to fight for border security and the safety of our nation in the coming weeks.

Around the State
Columbia Meet & Greet
I was happy to meet with small business owners and Rotary Club members last Wednesday morning for a great discussion about education, Opportunity Zones, and much more.

Medal of Valor Banquet
I was honored to be the keynote speaker at the South Carolina Sherriff’s Association Medal of Valor banquet last week. It was a privilege to join in remembering the life of Detective Mike Doty and recognize the law enforcement officers who continuously sacrifice to keep South Carolinians safe.

Sincerely,

Tim
