HBCU Fly-In and HBCU PARTNERS Act
Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of joining a bipartisan, bicameral coalition of Members of Congress to celebrate America’s more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities with my third annual HBCU Fly-In. It was a great way to kick off Black History Month, as we re-launched the bipartisan HBCU Caucus and introduced the HBCU Propelling Agency Relationships Towards a New Era of Results for Students (HBCU PARTNERS) Act.
The Act aims to strengthen partnerships between federal agencies and HBCUs, by requiring the agencies to engage in annual planning and coordination efforts as well as share their plans with Congress and track their progress. You can read more about the PARTNERS Act here, and see pictures and more details from the HBCU Fly-In here.
Anti-Semitism Awareness Act
At the end of January, I was happy to offer my Anti-Semitism Awareness Act submitted as an amendment to S.1, the Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act. According to the Anti-Defamation League, in 2018 there were 204 reported incidents of anti-Semitic related events on college campuses nearly doubled that of 108 in 2016. The surge in these acts can be attributed to the nationwide rise of anti-Semitic rhetoric and related occurrences.
However, some House Democrats have taken to historically anti-Semitic language, which does absolutely nothing to move our nation forward while offending millions of Americans. And while apologies are ok (even though one tied a pro-Israel group to liberal boogeymen the NRA and energy companies, therefore negating the apology), striving for unity is paramount.
You can read my full release on the amendment here and more about the bill here.
Summer Internships
I recently opened the application for summer internships with my offices. Positions are available at my Washington, DC, as well as my state (Columbia, Greenville, and North Charleston) offices. Interested South Carolina students can apply here.
Sincerely,
