Dear fellow South Carolinians,

Thank you for subscribing to my weekly e-newsletter, and please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

Fighting Anti-Semitism
I was happy to visit the White House last week as President Trump took important steps to combating anti-Semitism. His Executive Order, based off my Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, is a strong step forward to curb and condemn the ongoing surge of anti-Semitic incidents across the country.

Ensuring Seniors Access to Quality Care Act
Last week, I joined Sen. Mark Warner to introduce the Ensuring Seniors Access to Quality Care Act. This legislation aims to help senior living facilities caring for aging adults to better screen, hire, and retain quality staff.

Our senior citizens, and their families, know the importance of having well-qualified, compassionate and trustworthy caregivers in senior living facilities. The Ensuring Seniors Access to Quality Care Act will help these facilities more efficiently hire the best candidates, and, in turn, provide better care for seniors everywhere. You can read more about the bill here.

IMPACT Act: Update
On Thursday, my IMPACT Act added bipartisan cosponsors. I’m happy to have Senators Lankford (R-OK) and Sinema (D-AZ) join Sens. Grassley (R-IA), Rubio (R-FL), Capito (R-WV), Young (R-IN), Ernst (R-IA), Cassidy (R-LA), and Gardner (R-CO) on this legislation.

The IMPACT Act aims to bolster, strengthen, & increase transparency of my Opportunity Zones initiative. Combating poverty is deeply personal for me & I want to ensure that we do our due diligence in making sure everyone has a chance to succeed. These reporting requirements will help show communities and investors that the initiative is working, as well as help root out any fraud or abuse. This is an important piece of the puzzle to help the more than 31 million Americans living in Opportunity Zones experience a brighter future. You can read more about the legislation here.

Another Win for HBCUs
Last week, my bipartisan amendment to secure more than $46 million for Historically Black Colleges and Universities made it into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). And more good news- the NDAA is expected to pass both chambers of Congress this week!

The $46 million secured will go towards funding the Department of Defense’s HBCU and Minority Institutions Program, which is designed to increase the participation of HBCU and minority students in the Department of Defense’s research, development, test, and evaluation programs. You can read more about my efforts to secure this funding here.

Sincerely,
