Dear fellow South Carolinians,

JUSTICE Act Obstructed:
Last Wednesday, Senate Democrats voted to block all debate on the JUSTICE Act. They said no – no to even beginning a conversation about a bill that already contained 70% of what they wanted, no to an open legislative process, and no to my offer of at least 20 amendments.

This was our chance, as the United States Senate, to say to those kids growing up in the same situation I did: we see you, we hear you, and we will take action. Heartbreakingly, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle chose to prioritize presidential politics over the needs of the American people.

After the Senate Democrats rejected this important piece of legislation, I took to the Senate floor to discuss the JUSTICE Act, my disappointment, and the path forward. You can view the video of my speech by clicking the image below.

COVID-19 and Resources:
As businesses continue to open and testing continues to increase, we are seeing an increase in coronavirus cases across South Carolina. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that everyone follow the guidelines set forth by public health officials. That means wearing a mask and following social distancing guidelines when out, washing your hands thoroughly, and – critically – staying home when feeling ill. We all have a role to play in protecting the most vulnerable among us.

If you are feeling ill, click here for information from the South Carolina Department of Health on tele-health options and testing locations. More information on resources for South Carolinians is also available on my website.

As with criminal justice reform or any other issue facing our nation today, the way we can overcome this virus is by working together. Let’s save lives by uniting to protect one another.

Sincerely,
