Hello Friend,
My focus remains on opening up all schools in South Carolina and around the nation. The longer we rob our children of in-person learning, the more we devastate their health and futures. Earlier this month, I joined Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in filing an amendment to make K-12 funding contingent on schools reopening for in-person learning by the end of April. Senate Democrats blocked the measure and continue to put liberal special interests ahead of the needs of students. I will keep fighting to ensure our children and families are put first.
The Biden Administration’s Radical Agenda
President Biden’s choice for Deputy Secretary of Education, San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Superintendent Cindy Marten, is deeply troubling. The San Diego NAACP says her administration cut key programs and resources for African American students. She has a record of mishandling abuse, harassment, sexual misconduct, and discrimination cases.
With her entire district closed for in-person learning, Marten is another official following labor bosses rather than the needs of her constituents. To make matters worse, under her leadership, the district used hundreds of thousands of dollars of CARES Act funds for lobbyists. I am dedicated to supporting nominees who are committed to quality education options and getting students back into the classroom; Ms. Marten’s record just does not cut it.
Enhancing Access to Higher Education
I know choosing a college is one of the most important decisions that a young person can make in their life. I am proud to join my colleagues in reintroducing the College Transparency Act. The bipartisan legislation ensures students and families have clear information as they consider higher education opportunities.
The bill modernizes the college reporting system for postsecondary data by providing accurate reporting on student outcomes such as enrollment, completion, and post-college earnings across colleges and majors, while ensuring the privacy of individual students is securely protected. This information will give students a clear understanding of the return on investment in higher education and help point them toward schools and programs of study best suited to their unique needs and desired outcomes. It will also aid institutions of learning and policymakers in their work to improve our country’s post-secondary education system.
I continue to believe that our most important investment is in the next generation. Opening doors to a quality education at all levels ensures access to limitless opportunity for kids of all backgrounds.
