The Biden Labor Shortage
Last week’s job report was a gut-punch to our economic recovery. Though millions of Americans are still unemployed, businesses that are reopening their doors have been unable to find workers. Why? The Democrats want to keep paying people not to work.
When the pandemic hit we passed bipartisan legislation to get business owners and workers the help they needed to get through a tough year. Those measures, including enhanced unemployment benefits, were necessary at the time. Now that our economy has reopened, we cannot continue to incentivize unemployment. That’s why I co-sponsored the Get Americans Back to Work Act, a bill to phase out supplemental unemployment benefits by the end of June and encourage folks to rejoin the workforce.
The sooner we get our economy firing on all cylinders again, the sooner we will restore hope for the success of future generations.
Opportunity Internships
Two weeks ago, I attended the first ever Opportunity Internship Fair in Charleston. I came up with the concept of Opportunity Internships in partnership with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and United Way Association of South Carolina in order to open doors to career opportunities for students at Title 1 schools (those with a high proportion of low income families) in the Palmetto State.
At the fair I had the opportunity to connect with students from across Charleston County, including my alma mater R.B. Stall High School. I told them one of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years: Limited circumstances have nothing to do with the potential that’s inside of each person. It’s my mission to give all students the opportunity to unleash their full potential.

As I said in my response speech to President Biden’s joint address to Congress last month: “Our best future won’t come from Washington schemes or socialist dreams. It will come from you — the American people.” I know that if we work together to expand opportunity for all Americans—through commonsense policies that keep the government out of your lives—there is hope on the horizon for our country.
Sincerely,
P.S. The only way we’ll be successful in pushing back on liberal policies is with your help. Please forward this newsletter to 10 of your friends or family members and ask them to subscribe to receive my regular updates. Thanks! |
