Upholding the First Amendment
Earlier this year, I led a bill with several of my colleagues to protect child welfare providers from being discriminated against for acting in accordance with their religious beliefs. Discriminating against people of faith who want to be foster parents not only violates religious freedom, but it also harms children who may be deprived of a loving home.
Soon, the Supreme Court will rule on a case, Fulton v. Philadelphia, to determine whether we will continue to preserve this most fundamental right to religious freedom. I am hopeful that the Court will come to the right decision and we will uphold the First Amendment rights of religious organizations. When the decision comes down, Congress must do its job and immediately pass my bill to codify this protection in law.
No Taxpayer $ to Abortion Providers
Since we passed the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) last year, Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country have applied for and received $80 million—all illegally. When we wrote the PPP legislation, we made sure the funds were reserved for employers with 500 or fewer workers. Planned Parenthood has nearly 16,000 employees. Not only are the loan applications unlawful based on the size of the organization, but we also should never provide taxpayer money to an abortion provider.
In April, my fellow Senate Republicans and I wrote letters to President Biden’s attorney general, small business administrator, and SBA inspector general to demand immediate action to investigate and remedy Planned Parenthood’s illegal participation in the PPP. Every Life is Precious
At the end of last month, I joined my colleagues in sending a letter to Chuck Schumer, urging him to let us vote on the Protecting Individuals with Down Syndrome Act. I co-sponsored this bill to ban any and all abortions on the basis of a fetal Down syndrome diagnosis because I know that every life is a precious gift from God. Right now, two in every three unborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome in the U.S. are aborted. This is unacceptable; all individuals have inherent value, regardless of their age, status, disability, race, sex or any other factor. One of my most important roles as a senator is to protect the most vulnerable among us. I will never stop fighting for every American—born and unborn.
Sincerely,
