Dear Friend,
Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
Private Lenders Know Best
Throughout the pandemic, banks, credit unions, and other private lenders stepped up to efficiently distribute nearly 12 million loans. Meanwhile, government-run loan programs saw rampant mismanagement, fraud, and waste.
It shouldn’t come as a shock that private lenders do their job better than the federal government. Yet Democrats want to shell out $4.5 billion for the Small Business Administration to run its own lending program. This week, I wrote a letter to Democratic congressional leaders, opposing that costly and unequitable plan. Read more about it in Fox News.
A Voice for Those in Afghanistan
This week, I cosponsored the Afghanistan Counterterrorism, Oversight, and Accountability Act to address the Biden administration’s mistakes throughout its disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal—and to prevent them from ever happening again.
Though the crisis in Afghanistan may have faded from headlines, many Americans and Afghan allies remain in grave danger under the Taliban’s rule. We must continue to raise our voices on their behalf and ensure that our leaders never repeat the mistakes that led to the loss of 13 Americans, countless allies, and our credibility on the world stage.
A Conversation on Police Reform
I grew up in a single-parent household mired in poverty, so I understand the importance of police presence in our most vulnerable communities. Congress had a rare opportunity to craft police reform legislation—based on our many areas of agreement—that would strengthen those communities. Sadly my friends across the aisle decided not to move forward with negotiations.
This week, I spoke with Nexstar’s Kellie Meyer about why negotiations fell apart and why I refuse to give up. Ultimately, police reform is not about Republicans or Democrats—it’s about those communities, like the one I grew up in, that deserve to feel safe. Watch clips from our interview here and here.
