Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

This week offers an opportunity to ruminate on the theme of unity as we reflect on the first anniversary of Hamas’s unprovoked, barbaric attack on Israeli civilians and the recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene.

The anniversary of the attacks serves as a reminder of the importance of communities standing together in solidarity against violence and hatred.

Simultaneously, the recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene highlights the strength of the American Spirit, as communities in South Carolina and beyond demonstrate compassion and resilience in supporting those affected.

Both events serve as powerful reminders that, whether confronted by external threats or natural disasters, true strength is rooted in our ability to unite, support one another, and work towards healing and rebuilding. As we embrace the theme of unity, we create a stronger foundation, ultimately allowing us to navigate adversity more effectively.

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.”

Standing With Israel

Monday marked the first anniversary of Hamas’s unprovoked barbaric attack against Israeli civilians. As we reflect on the anniversary of this horrific event, we must stand toe-to-toe against global aggressors and vow our unwavering support to defend Israel in their time of need. I was proud to join all of my Senate Republican colleagues to stand united in support of Israel and against Iranian-backed terrorism and vile antisemitism around the world. Showing that we are loyal to our allies and lethal to our adversaries is the only way to deter another tragedy like this from happening. The United States will always stand with Israel.

Celebrating Faith-Based Education

Religious freedom is a fundamental right that strengthens our nation. I joined Senator Lindsey Graham in a resolution declaring October 6-12, 2024, as “Religious Education Week”, honoring the positive impact that faith-based education has on our communities. Families deserve the freedom to educate their children in the way they see fit. This resolution affirms the importance of parental rights in guiding their children’s spiritual and educational journeys. I’m committed to building a society that embraces our differences while uniting us around our shared commitment to education and faith.

Jewish Insider: U.S. officials say $6 billion in Iranian funds in Qatar remain frozen

By Marc Rod

October 9, 2024

U.S. officials are denying Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s claims this week to have reached a “good understanding” with the Qatari government regarding the approximately $6 billion in Iranian funds moved to a Qatari bank as part of a hostage deal struck with the United States last year. The U.S. froze the funds after the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks by the Iranian proxy group in Gaza and officials told Jewish Insider the funds remain frozen.

Amid bipartisan pressure following the Oct. 7 attacks, the Biden administration told lawmakers it would effectively refreeze those funds for the foreseeable future. Under the terms of the hostage deal, the funds would not enter Iran and could be used by the regime only for vetted humanitarian purchases outside Iran.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, told JI that he has “received assurances from the Treasury Department that the funds are frozen” — though he said Pezeshkian’s comments “underscore the importance” of passing legislation he is sponsoring to permanently lock down the funds.
