Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

As we wrap up Black History Month, let us remember that Black history is American history–far too rich and important to be celebrated only one month a year. Black Americans have shaped every part of our nation’s past, present, and future. This month has been a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs that have defined generations, but our commitment to honoring this legacy must extend beyond February. Progress is not just something to be remembered–it’s something we must actively fight for.

I recently had the honor of joining President Trump at the White House to celebrate Black History Month! This event was an opportunity to highlight the incredible contributions of African Americans and emphasize the essential role we have played in shaping the growth and development of our nation. During his remarks, President Trump recognized my Opportunity Zones initiative, which brings investment to economically distressed areas. He praised the program for its success in revitalizing communities, creating jobs, and stimulating economic growth in regions that have faced long-standing challenges. It was a moment to reflect on the strength, resilience, and perseverance that has defined the African American experience, and to pay tribute to the countless individuals and leaders who have paved the way for progress.

Week in Review

Building on My Commitment to Increase Economic Opportunity

I’m building on my commitment to creating more economic opportunities across the United States. In my roles as Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, I’m focused on advancing solutions that have the potential to unlock up to $1 trillion in investments for underserved communities. This effort is about building a future where every American has access to the tools and resources they need to succeed.

I was honored to join Walter Davis, founding member of Peachtree Providence Partners, for an important conversation as part of my Opportunity Summit series. Together, we discussed how we can work toward breaking down the barriers that prevent many Americans from reaching their full potential. Our shared goal is clear: to ensure that everyone has the chance to achieve their version of the American Dream, regardless of their background. By investing in these communities, we can foster lasting economic growth and create new opportunities. It’s about ensuring every American has the chance to thrive and contribute to the success of our nation.

The Opportunity Summit is designed to establish an ecosystem that drives economic growth in underserved communities, building on the success of my Opportunity Zones from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. My goal is to create lasting economic opportunities that will continue to empower communities for generations to come, ensuring that all Americans have the chance to thrive and achieve their fullest potential.

Following the Opportunity Summit, I welcomed Black business leaders to the United States Capitol to celebrate Black History Month! This gathering was an important moment to reflect on the achievements and contributions of Black Americans, while also reinforcing our commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for growth.

As we close out Black History Month, I am reminded that the journey toward prosperity is ongoing. The progress we've made is the result of tireless efforts from countless individuals, but there is still much work to be done. Together, through initiatives like Opportunity Zones, we can continue building pathways to success for everyone, regardless of background or circumstance. This work is about more than just economic development; it's about creating a future where every American has the opportunity to live the American Dream. And I will continue pushing forward until we make that future a reality for all.

Reauthorizing the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Program

As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, I introduced legislation to reauthorize the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Program, which was last authorized in 2018. Reauthorizing this program will allow us to expand access to research and treatment for rare blood diseases and reduce the number of people in already overwhelmed emergency rooms. Senator Booker joined me in this effort, and we are glad to play a small role in easing the burden that SCD has on too many individuals and their families.

Fox News: My family sacrificed for me. And now I have a plan to unlock opportunity for others

By Senator Tim Scott

February 28, 2025

My grandfather was born in South Carolina in 1921 and was forced out of school in the third grade because there was no need for an "educated Black boy."

He never learned to read or write, but he had a photographic memory and a spirit of resilience. When I was young, he told me, "You can be a victim, or you can be victorious – but you cannot be both."

Growing up in poverty and being raised by a single mother has given me a profound appreciation for those who paved the way so that I could be where I am today.
