Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

This week marked another busy week in Washington advocating for the best interests of South Carolinians and Americans across our nation. Protecting our homeland and defending the safety of our communities is always my top priority.  I introduced the Sanctuary City Elimination Act to ensure our ICE agents are supported and protected as they work tirelessly on their commitment to public safety.  I also stood with my Republican colleagues in voting to advance funding for ICE and CBP through budget reconciliation. Additionally, as Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, I led a hearing to consider the nomination of Kevin Warsh to serve as a Governor and next Chair of the Federal Reserve. Lastly, I would like to give a huge congratulations to the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Women’s Polo Team for winning the national championship. Their undefeated season, the first in program history, exemplifies true teamwork and commitment, embodying the best of South Carolina!

Week in Review

Holding Sanctuary Jurisdictions Accountable

Every family in South Carolina deserves to feel safe in their own community, and that starts with a system that puts public safety first. I introduced the Sanctuary City Elimination Act to empower state and local law enforcement to work hand-in-hand with ICE to protect American communities from illegal and violent criminals, empower the officers who are doing their jobs, and make sure jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate are not rewarded with federal tax dollars. The tragic loss of two young kids near Spartanburg last week is a devastating reminder of the real consequences of President Biden’s open border policies, which are continuing to harm our communities. We must protect our officers who protect our communities, and if sanctuary cities won’t enforce the law – this bill makes sure someone will.

Wastewater Surveillance Commitment

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I joined a hearing focused on health care priorities and accomplishments of the Department of Health and Human services. During the hearing, I highlighted my PREDICT Act, which is designed to strengthen and expand wastewater surveillance to detect outbreaks early. I appreciated HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s affirming his commitment in working together on this initiative to stay ahead of public health emergencies and proactively protect our communities.

Championing Kevin Warsh As Chair of Federal Reserve

As Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, I led a hearing on the nomination of Kevin Warsh to serve as a Governor and next Chair of the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve’s decisions have a direct impact on everyday Americans, including how much families pay for groceries, housing, and how far their paychecks go at the end of each month. An independent Federal Reserve focused on its core mission of stable prices and maximum employment is critical, and I’m confident that Kevin Warsh meets the moment to tackle inflation, spur growth, and improve consumer confidence.

ABC News 4: Scott, Cornyn unveil 'Sanctuary City Elimination Act' in latest push against immigration

By: Ian Kayanja

Republican U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, in legislation introduced alongside Sen. John Cornyn, has proposed avenues to curtail the proliferation of "sanctuary city" policies nationwide.

Scott's bill, coined the Sanctuary City Elimination Act, would prohibit sanctuary jurisdictions from accessing certain federal grants or other federal funding. Additionally, it would also create a right of action for victims of criminal migrants who are released from sanctuary jurisdictions and reoffend in other states.

"Every family in South Carolina deserves to feel safe in their own community, and that starts with a system that puts public safety first," Scott said. "The Sanctuary City Elimination Act takes a commonsense step forward by empowering state and local law enforcement to work hand-in-hand with DHS, while protecting the officers who are doing their jobs, and ensuring jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate are not rewarded with federal tax dollars."
