CELEBRATING AMERICAN WORKERS

September 4, 2026

Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

The success of our great nation is built on the grit, ingenuity, and contributions of American workers. Since our country’s founding, generations of hardworking men and women have helped make the United States a global leader in innovation, opportunity, and prosperity. Here in South Carolina, our workforce is the backbone of the businesses, industries, and communities that keep the Palmetto State thriving. This Labor Day, we celebrate and reflect on the values that make us proud to call America home. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Labor Day!

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

— Colossians 3:23-24

The Week in Review

Celebrating Our National Parks

National Park Week is a reminder of the importance of recognizing and protecting an important part of our nation’s rich history and beautiful landscapes. From the natural beauty of Congaree to the historic grounds of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie, South Carolina is home to some of the most beautiful places in God’s creation. I encourage South Carolinians to spend time enjoying our national parks, learning about their history, and appreciating the beautiful nation we are blessed to call home.

Championing The East Coast Port System

The Charleston Harbor is one of the East Coast’s busiest ports, driving economic activity and supporting jobs and manufacturing across South Carolina. South Carolina Ports and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, signed a feasibility study agreement to explore deepening the harbor near the North Charleston Terminal. This study marks an important step forward for the Lowcountry and will have beneficial effects across the state. I am grateful to everyone involved in advancing this project and ensuring the Palmetto State remains the epicenter of the East Coast’s port system.

Fighting For The American People

South Carolinians deserve a government that prioritizes their safety, paychecks, and critical services over politics. Congress passed and President Trump signed a short-term funding bill to keep the government open and serving the American people through December 11. By acting ahead of the deadline, we’re preventing a government shutdown, making sure federal employees continue to be paid for their hard work, families can access essential services, and the agencies that keep our nation safe have the resources they need. I’ll continue working to keep our government responsibly funded, protect hardworking Americans, and deliver the results that the American people deserve.

The Alston Wilkes Society provides support for veterans and their families, individuals involved with the justice system, and at-risk youth and adults across South Carolina. The organization’s work assists thousands of South Carolinians each year through housing assistance, workforce development, reentry services, and youth programs. When we help our neighbors achieve stability and build hope for a brighter future, our entire state becomes stronger. The AWS team, its volunteers, and community leaders are shining examples of what it means to make a meaningful difference in the lives of South Carolinians.

SC Ports looks to deepen channel to N. Chas Terminal

Charleston Harbor already has the deepest harbor in the Southeast at 52 feet. The successful deepening of this stretch would enable all SC Ports’ container terminals to handle the biggest ship at any tide, further enhancing port competitiveness.

“Deepening this final stretch makes our port more competitive and supports our long-term plan to modernize and enhance North Charleston Terminal,” SC Ports President and CEO Micah Mallace said. “Having the deepest harbor in the Southeast ensures expedited logistics for port customers and enhances South Carolina’s competitiveness, helping to drive cargo growth and create jobs.” […]

“The agreement to begin a feasibility study to deepen the Upper Harbor shipping channel of Charleston Harbor is an important step forward for the Lowcountry and South Carolina’s economy. This project will help make sure the region remains an epicenter of the East Coast’s port system, supporting jobs, businesses and manufacturers across our state. I am grateful to President Trump, the partnership of the South Carolina Ports Authority and US Army Corps of Engineers, as well as the efforts of all those who have helped make this project possible," said US Senator Tim Scott.
