It's been a little more than 60 days in to the new Congress, and my new position as your Senator, and I'd like to offer an update on some of the work I am doing on behalf of Hoosiers. We started the process to repeal Obamacare and have begun meaningful regulatory reform that will put Hoosier small businesses in a position to succeed. We’ve rolled back several burdensome regulations, including “The Stream Rule” which would have crippled Indiana’s coal industry, and, we are beginning the process of confirming a faithful Constitutionalist to the United States Supreme Court – an issue that I know was a top priority for many of you. Keep reading for more on my role in these actions as well as a few other issues you may care about:

On the Job

Mainstream, Faithful Constitutionalist

I met with Neil Gorsuch,  President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, for nearly an hour in my office. I expected him to be impressive, and he was, but I appreciated that he mentioned Hoosiers specifically in our conversation. He understands that, for Hoosiers, all of the rights that allow us to pursue the American dream are at stake. The Senate will begin hearing on Mr. Gorsuch's confirmation next week; for my candid take on our meeting, click on the image below:

Rolling Back Regulations that Would Have Eliminated Indiana Coal Jobs

"I voted to overturn a job-killing coal regulation before it could do serious damage to Indiana’s economy. When it was introduced in the waning days of the Obama Administration, they called it “The Stream Rule”, but at home in Indiana, we knew it for exactly what it is, “the coal rule”.  It would have effectively locked-up half of the nation’s coal supply below ground, and thus destroyed as many as a third of America’s coal mining jobs.

It’s time to end the era of federal overreach and allow Hoosiers to pursue their livelihoods without fear that a rule passed by unelected bureaucrats will harm our industries." To read more on this, click here

These are some of our most critical jobs: Workers at Crane keep America safe

"Securely tucked away amidst Indiana’s rolling hills and farmland, CAAA is the country’s second largest Army munitions depot situated on the world’s third largest Navy base — Naval Support Activity Crane.

Here, more than a quarter of the entire U.S. military’s munitions inventory is stored, maintained, renovated, shipped and handled with care by Army civilian personnel.

Although only two of the hundreds of patriots serving at CAAA wear a military uniform, the men and women of Crane’s Army workforce perform an essential mission — getting our troops the tools they need to defeat our enemies and come home safely. They help maintain the readiness of our armed forces around the world. Sen. Donnelly and I worked together to ensure that Crane can hire the employees it needs to fulfill its important mission..." read more about those efforts here

They are testing us; we must stand strong

Senators Cornyn, Rubio, and I were among the first to urge this new Administration to stand-up to Iran. We applauded their decision to sanction more than two dozen individuals and entities associated with Iran’s terrorist activities and ballistic missile program. Read our column on Foxnews.com.

Sen. Todd Young’s tuition plan: ‘Pay your way through school, after school’
And so, Young has introduced the Investing in Student Success Act of 2017 in order to facilitate an alternative model of financing education. Critically, the funding would not come from the federal government, but private companies who sign "income-sharing agreements" with students. As the name implies, the investor finances the student's tuition, in exchange for a percentage of the individual's income for a set number of years after graduation.

Senate Marine veteran pushes new war authorization
Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., a former Marine intelligence officer who sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, introduced a bill last week that could reopen the debate over war powers as President Donald Trump reviews a new Pentagon strategy against the Islamic State group and wages new bombing in Yemen. Several House lawmakers are also pushing for an updated authorization for the use of military force, known as an AUMF.

One more thing before you go...

It was my privilege to vote to confirm two Hoosiers this week: my predecessor, Dan Coats as Director of National Intelligence, and Seema Verma as Administrator for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. They have done our state proud and I know they will serve our country well. Check out this picture with Seema and her fantastic family moments before her Senate confirmation hearing:

Thank you for the continued privilege to serve our state in this new post in the Senate. My mission is to fight on behalf of Hoosiers and the interests that are unique to our state. I look forward to working with you, and sharing our progress, in the days ahead. Until then…

In Service,

Todd Young
