From the Office of Senator Rick Scott:

Dear Friends:

I am truly honored to serve as Florida's United States Senator, and appreciate your support as I fight for Floridians in Washington, D.C. Before I became the governor of Florida, I was a business owner. I opened my first business, a small donut shop, shortly after serving as an enlisted member of the Navy. The shop helped give my mom a job while my wife Ann and I worked full time and continued our education.

Growing up with nothing taught me the value of hard work. I have always rejected the idea that government has to be slow and ineffective. Government can move efficiently, and government can secure results – if it has the right leaders. It’s time we hold our leaders accountable and reform the dysfunctional and tired ways of thinking in Washington and make sure Congress actually works for families across the nation – not just for career politicians in D.C.

I'm proud to launch my first weekly newsletter, and invite you all to follow our progress as we continue our efforts to make Florida the best state for families and businesses to succeed.

Rick Scott
United States Senator

Making Washington Work for Floridians:

This week, Senator Rick Scott sponsored a bill to provide disaster relief funding for Florida and Puerto Rico following the devastation of hurricanes Michael and Maria, and legislation to implement a permanent lobbying ban on members of Congress.

Senator Rick Scott also signed on to a measure to affirm the United States’ commitment to fighting freedom and democracy in Cuba and another celebrating Black History Month.

Sen. Rick Scott Introduces Bill to Permanently Ban Members of Congress from Lobbying

Senator Rick Scott joined Senator Mike Braun to introduce the Banning Lobbying and Safeguarding Trust (BLAST) Act, which implements a permanent lobbying ban for members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. A lobbying ban on Congress is part of Senator Rick Scott’s 10-point plan to make Washington work for families, which also includes ending taxpayer-funded Congressional Pensions, implementing term limits, and No Budget, No Pay legislation.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I’m proud to introduce this bill that imposes a permanent ban on members of Congress becoming lobbyists. Rather than serving the public, too many in Washington spend their political careers preparing for a lucrative job at a DC lobbying firm where they can cash in on their connections and their access. Congress should never serve as a training ground for future lobbyists, and putting an end to the revolving door is a common sense way to make Washington work for families.” Read more HERE

Senator Rick Scott Introduces $13.6 Billion Disaster Relief Package

Senator Rick Scott and a bipartisan group of Senators introduced a major disaster relief package, which includes funding for the Florida Panhandle following the devastation from Hurricane Michael, and also includes Senator Scott’s amendment to provide $600 million in relief funding for Puerto Rico.

Senator Rick Scott said, “As Governor of Florida, I saw firsthand the destruction left behind by multiple devastating hurricanes. Following these storms, we worked nonstop to help our communities recover – but there is still a lot to do, especially when it comes to rebuilding Tyndall Air Force Base. Disaster funding should not be a political fight and needs to be brought to the floor of the Senate as quickly as possible. I will never stop fighting for disaster funding to help Tyndall return to its full operation and make sure Florida families and businesses have the resources they need to get back to their normal lives. I’m glad this bill also includes the funding to help our friends in Puerto Rico continue to rebuild following Hurricane Maria.” Read more HERE

Sen. Rick Scott: Resources Needed to Help Florida’s Timber Industry Recover From Hurricane Michael

Sen. Rick Scott: Dems Playing Politics on Common Sense Bill to Protect Newborns

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after Democrats blocked cloture on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

Senator Rick Scott said,“Democrats once again decided to put politics above the safety of newborn babies and voted to block a common sense bill that simply requires doctors to provide medical care to all babies born alive. It is shocking that anyone would refuse to take action to protect the most vulnerable among us – and while I’m disappointed, it’s now more clear than ever that Democrats are beholden to the extremists in their party. Voting against this bill is tantamount to supporting infanticide. It’s extraordinarily sad to see members of the United States Senate take this position.” Read more HERE

Sen. Rick Scott to President Trump: U.S. Must Immediately Extend TPS to Venezuelans

Over the weekend, his thugs blocked humanitarian aid to the country and killed innocent civilians who were simply trying to bring food, water and medicine into their country. Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans are fleeing the violence and starvation of Maduro’s socialist regime..." Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott in the Orlando Sentinel: Green New Deal is Green Job Killer

Excerpts below; read the full article HERE.

Much has already been written on the so-called “Green New Deal” introduced to the American public by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the next big Democrat idea. If you are not familiar with it, here’s the cliff notes version: it calls for rebuilding or retrofitting every building in America in the next 10 years, eliminating all fossil fuels in 10 years, eliminating nuclear power, and working towards ending air travel (to be replaced with high-speed rail).

There are even crazier things in this “Green New Deal,” but why bother, it’s not a serious policy idea; it’s a unicorn. It’s like an idea conceived in a dorm room or the dark back room of a liberal think-tank by people who have never had a real job in their lives.

The far-left Democrats fail to grasp something basic — Republicans and Independents care about the environment. We want clean air, we want clean water, and we feel obligated to be good stewards of this planet God has given us. But we do not worship the planet, we simply live on it.

At the same time, we also care about our economy, our jobs, and making sure that everyone has opportunity for success. We believe that taking care of the planet and pursuing economic prosperity and stability are objectives that can and must be pursued and realized simultaneously.

Now for the plain truth of the matter — to embrace this Green New Deal plan is to be an enemy of the American economy and the American worker. Anyone who endorses it is a math denier and a job destroyer. The “Green New Deal” is in reality the “Green Job Killer.” ...
