Much of the Senate's focus this week was geared toward passing the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (NDAA) and the supplemental funding bill to address the immigration crisis at our southern border. Senator Romney spoke on the Senate Floor regarding his NDAA amendment to affirm the president's constitutional authority to protect and defend the United States. The Senator also met with Bill Gates, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, and multiple groups of Utahns.

 

Tying the president’s hands in the midst of a crisis is misguided and dangerous. Senator Romney spoke on the Senate Floor on his amendment to the NDAA, affirming the constitutional authority of the president to keep our military, our citizens, and our allies safe.

Romney amendment #861 passed the Senate with an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, 90-4.

The Senate border supplemental bill provides much-needed resources for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services. Passing the Senate by a vote of 84-8, the measure was subsequently passed by the House of Representatives.

Fostering sustainable forest and land management policies, the impact of wildfires, and finding ways to reduce fuel load are all issues of critical importance to Utah. Senator Romney discussed those items with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) voted this week to approve key components of the Tobacco 21 Act, legislation introduced by Senator Romney with colleagues Todd Young (R-IN), Brian Schatz (D-HI), and Dick Durbin (D-IL) to prohibit the sale of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to anyone under the age of 21.

Senator Romney has prioritized finding ways to encourage investment in breakthrough technology to help tackle the global problem of climate change. This week, he welcomed Bill Gates to the office to discuss this topic.

Several groups of Utahns stopped by the Washington, D.C. office this week, including:

Kalii, Alex, and Scott (and their families)—the Department of Education's 2019 Presidential Scholars from Utah. These graduating seniors were recognized for their success in academics, the arts, and career & technical education.

A group of educators from South Hills Middle School, Lava Ridge Intermediate School, and Fort Herriman Middle School.

Representatives from financial company SoFi to discuss its recent economic development in Utah with two locations in the Salt Lake Valley.

Last Friday, Senator Romney spent time at the Strawberry Days Rodeo in Pleasant Grove, raising awareness for breast cancer research with Mayor Guy Fugal.

He also held a town hall in Provo.

Senator Lee and Senator Romney teamed up to introduce the Early Action Against Ozone Act, legislation that would allow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to work with local governments to lower pollution before they violate the Clean Air Act.
