This week, Senator Romney joined his colleagues in introducing legislation, two bills aimed at protecting our national security from the China threat, and one bill to remove unnecessary barriers so that the DoD installations, like Utah's Hill Air Force Base, can hire retired members of our military in a more timely manner. The Senator also chaired a hearing on the U.S. policy in Iraq. Learn more about Senator Romney's week below:

As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, Senator Romney convened a hearing titled “Iraq: A Crossroads of U.S. Policy,” focused on addressing how the United States can support Iraq in achieving a secure and prosperous future. Senator Romney introduced David B. Barlow of South Jordan, Utah, at his nomination hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Barlow has been nominated to be United States District Judge for the District of Utah.

Senator Romney had met with Mr. Barlow earlier in the week. After their meeting, the Senator expressed his full confidence in Mr. Barlow to faithfully apply the law and our Constitution to all matters and parties that come before him.

Access to public lands is a major concern among Utah’s rural counties. Senator Romney met with Uintah County commissioners to discuss their plan to maintain and ensure motorized access to the public lands within their county and offer assistance in proving the status of county roads.

Senator Romney welcomed new University of Utah President Ruth Watkins to the office to receive an update on current initiatives at the University.

Senator Romney joined Senators Mike Lee (R-UT), James Lankford (R-OK), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), and David Perdue (R-GA) in introducing legislation to repeal the 180-day waiting period that a military retiree must wait until he or she can enter a civilian job at the Department of Defense (DoD) for which he or she is qualified. Currently, a six-month mandatory waiting period is preventing military installations around the country, like Utah’s Hill Air Force Base, from hiring the most qualified candidates for civilian jobs.

We must make a concerted effort to confront the threat China poses to U.S. national security, intellectual property, and technology. Senator Romney joined Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in introducing legislation to reinforce the Trump administration’s efforts to prevent the Chinese-owned telecom company Huawei from threatening America’s national security.

Senator Romney also introduced the Huawei Prohibition Act of 2019 with Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Susan Collins (R-ME). This legislation would ensure that Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is not removed from the Commerce Department’s Entity List of sanctioned companies until after the Secretary of Commerce certifies that the company no longer poses a national security threat.

Iraq is a place of enormous strategic interest for the U.S. In light of ongoing challenges, the key question now for us is how to best support Iraq’s efforts to achieve a secure and prosperous future and become a stabilizing force in the region. At his Senate Foreign Relations Near East Subcommittee hearing, Senator Romney, along with Ranking Member Chris Murphy (D-CT), called for a full diplomatic presence to be restored in Baghdad as soon as possible.
