As we look back on this past week, we must acknowledge and reflect on the tragedy and loss of life that occurred in Las Vegas Sunday evening. We must offer our full support to the victims and their families as our nation mourns.

Tax Reform

On Thursday, I joined President Donald Trump as he visited Indianapolis to outline the details of his tax reform plan. It’s been three decades since our tax code was reformed, and Hoosiers want America to have a fairer and simpler tax policy.

The President made a convincing case that this tax reform package will boost the economy and increase the take-home pay of every Hoosier. For the first time in 30 years, the prospects for a simpler tax code that lowers taxes for the working class and provides relief for small business owners looks good.

On Friday, I spoke with Neil Cavuto on Fox Business about the need for tax reform. The framework proposed this week will help those of modest means get a leg up and will help Hoosier manufacturers be more competitive in a global economy.

NW Indiana Infrastructure

When you get time with the President, you have to make the most of it. I used the opportunity to pitch our rail projects in Northwest Indiana.

President Trump knows we need to make a significant investment in America’s infrastructure and he was receptive to the case I made for rail projects in Northern Indiana, locks and dams to move our home-grown goods, and rural broadband to keep Indiana connected to the world. I’m excited to work with the President on this issue and optimistic that we will get bipartisan support in Congress.

The South Shore Rail Line and the West Lake Corridor are critical parts of future economic growth in the region, and Republicans and Democrats at all levels of government are rowing in the same direction.

Bringing a Taste of Indiana to DC

Last week, I was able to showcase Indiana products when I hosted lunch for my fellow senators. Senators were able to sample fried pork tenderloin sandwiches, sweet corn on the cob, fried biscuits with apple butter, and sugar cream pie.

I also had the opportunity to bring some Hoosier snacks to my colleagues. Thanks to the talented men and women at South Bend Chocolate Company; Not Just Popcorn in Edinburgh; Cardinal Spirits in Bloomington; and Schimpff's Confectionery in Jeffersonville. Your treats were a big hit, and I was thrilled to be able to show off our state’s products.

I’ve been waiting to provide my colleagues with a real taste of Indiana. We have a lot to be proud of in the Hoosier State, including great food and the talented men and women who produce it.

U.S. Steel Industry

On Wednesday, I reached out to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on behalf of Hoosiers throughout the U.S. steel industry. In my letter, I highlighted the importance of transparency within the Section 232 investigation regarding the importation of steel.

Indiana plays a vital role in domestic industrial base with significant steel production and downstream users of steel products. The continued uncertainty facing Hoosier job creators from the pending 232 investigation threatens not only the steel producers throughout Indiana but also many downstream manufactures.

Letter to Secretary Ross here.

One more thing before you go...

Among the visitors who stopped by this week was Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, who came to discuss how our federal and state governments can continue to work together to improve the lives of Hoosiers.

Thank you for the continued privilege to serve you in the U.S. Senate. My mission is to fight on behalf of Hoosiers and the interests that are unique to our state. I look forward to working with you, and sharing our progress, in the days ahead. Until then…
