June 15 - June 19, 2020

This week, Senate Republicans, led by Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), introduced the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere (JUSTICE) Act, legislation which would improve policing practices across the United States. Senator Romney co-sponsored the JUSTICE Act, urging his colleagues "to work together toward a bipartisan solution that will build greater trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.” The Senator spoke about these efforts, as well as his long-standing work to address our national debt, in an interview with Utah's ABC4. More information on Senator Romney's week can be found below:

Senator Romney joined his Republican colleagues, led by Senator Scott, in introducing the JUSTICE Act. While the great majority of our law enforcement personnel in Utah and across our country do a heroic job, there are issues of oversight and accountability that need to be corrected, particularly when it comes to treatment of people of color. The JUSTICE Act would help to correct these weaknesses by strengthening de-escalation training, requiring reporting on use of force, and collecting data to develop best practices that will help improve policing. More information on the JUSTICE Act can be found here.

The Senator also participated in a bipartisan reading of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail on the Senate floor.

Additional spending was necessary to help protect Americans and our economy during the COVID-19 crisis. But we must get back to work to reduce the debt and rescue federal trust funds from insolvency. This week, the Brookings Institute published an op-ed in support of Senator Romney's TRUST Act and advocating for its consideration in Congress.
