With federal unemployment insurance benefits expiring this week, unemployed workers should not be left in limbo while Congress continues to negotiate the next relief package. Senator Romney teamed up with Senators Collins (R-ME) and McSally (R-AZ) to introduce legislation that would prevent Americans from experiencing a sudden lapse in their supplemental benefits. Their solution would extend and phase down supplemental UI benefits for three months so Americans don’t experience a sudden lapse.

Senator Romney also joined colleagues to introduce the Coronavirus Assistance for American Families Act, which would provide Economic Impact Payments of $1,000 to adults and children with Social Security numbers (SSNs). While Senator Romney’s preference would be to limit the scope of these payments to children only, this proposal is a step in the right direction. "With schools moving children to online learning from home, families in Utah and across the country have experienced unexpected challenges and additional costs for supplies during the last several months. As we consider additional relief measures, we should prioritize families by providing them with resources to help with the extra expenses they face as a result of COVID-19," he said.

If we’re going to dissuade China from pursuing its current course, the U.S. must link arms with our allies to collectively push back on China’s economic, military, and geopolitical predation. During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Senator Romney questioned Secretary of State Pompeo on the U.S. strategy toward China, especially given recent actions from the Administration that have offended our allies.

Utah’s sheep ranchers are facing bottleneck issues in the processing of their products for market, and the recent acquisition of a Mountain States Rosen (MSR) lamb processing facility in Greeley, CO by JBS will only exacerbate these issues. Senator Romney, Senator Lee (R-UT), Rep. Bishop (R-UT), and Rep. Stewart (R-UT) joined a group of colleagues in sending a letter the Justice Department Antitrust Division to call for an investigation into the acquisition of the MSR facility.
Senators take turns hosting a working lunch for their colleagues and this week was Senator Romney’s turn. Wanting to bring a taste of Utah to Washington, the Senator served food from Brick Oven in Provo and, of course, chocolate milk and ice cream from BYU Creamery.
