Senator Romney was home in Utah this week to introduce new legislation aimed at improving strategies to prevent future wildfires from becoming catastrophic disasters in Utah and across the West. So far this year, approximately 1,423 wildfires have occurred in Utah, burning approximately 311,000 acres. The Senator also joined VA Secretary Wilkie on a visit to the VA Salt Lake City Health Care Facility to learn about new technologies being used to treat our veterans, and to thank facility staff. Utah and other Western states have faced an unprecedented level of wildland fires this year—due in large part to many decades of poor forest management and a persistent lack of local input when it comes to best management practices. When it comes to managing fires, lands, and disasters, Washington bureaucrats are not the experts. Senator Romney joined Lt. Governor Spencer Cox and local leaders in Millcreek to introduce his bill to bring together officials from all levels of government and outside experts to establish a national commission aimed at improving strategies to prevent and respond to wildfires.

Senator Romney announced he intends to vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to be an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, saying: “After meeting with Judge Barrett and carefully reviewing her record and her testimony, I intend to vote in favor of her confirmation to the Supreme Court. She is impressive, and her distinguished legal and academic credentials make it clear that she is exceptionally well qualified to serve as our next Supreme Court justice. I am confident that she will faithfully apply the law and our Constitution, impartially and regardless of policy preferences."
