At the start of the week, Senator Romney voted against the nomination of Rep. Deb Haaland to serve as Secretary of Interior due to her record and views on land management and energy resources, including her support for radical policies like the Green New Deal. He also expressed concerns regarding the Administration's 30x30 initiative to put restrictions on 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. Senator Romney joined colleagues from Western states in requesting further clarification regarding this mandate and urged the Administration to include state and local governments, tribes, and stakeholders in future negotiations and decisions regarding Utah’s lands and waters.
In response to the delegation's request, Secretary Haaland announced that she would be visiting Utah to tour the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. The Department of Interior also announced an extension of the boundaries' review deadline until after the Secretary visited Utah, another ask of the Utah congressional delegation and state leaders. The Utah leaders released a statement following Interior's announcement, saying: "We are...confident that this trip will successfully highlight the need for a permanent legislative solution for determining appropriate boundaries for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments." Senator Romney discussed this progress with Governor Cox and the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition.

Senator Romney, who served as president and CEO of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games in 2002, called for an economic and diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Games because "it is increasingly clear that China, under the control of the Chinese Communist Party, does not deserve an Olympic showcase." His proposal would repudiate China’s abuses in a way that will hurt the Chinese Communist Party, rather than our American athletes, by reducing China’s revenues, shutting down their propaganda, and exposing their abuses.
