March 22 - March 26, 2021

This week, Senator Romney continued advocating for the use of scientific data in determining the reopening of k-12 schools throughout the country. During a Senate Health Committee hearing, he stressed that the cost of keeping our kids out of school is so unbelievably high—academically and socially—that it is inconceivable schools remain closed when data doesn't show an increased risk. The Senator continued to advocate for his proposal to provide greater financial security for American families during an event with the Sutherland Institute. And hemet with a group of Utah business leaders to discuss immigration, and representatives from Salt Lake City-based Ivanti, a software company, about the state’s outstanding business climate.

Senator Romney also paused to mourn the victims of the tragic shooting in Boulder, Colorado, Senator Romney said: "Heartbroken over the senseless shooting in Boulder, Colorado. Ten lives that were taken far too soon, including Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones, and the entire Boulder community during this time."

Scientific data, not teachers unions, should dictate the re-opening of our country's schools. During a Senate Health Committee hearing, the Biden Administration's nominee for Deputy Secretary of Education confirmed that data shows no significant difference in COVID-19 infection rates in communities where schools are open. It's high time we get our children back in school—those that can re-open safely should do so.

Raising society's children is some of the most important work one will ever do, yet many Americans are delaying childbirth or having fewer children because of the cost. This has led to birth rates being at an all-time low. Senator Romney joined Ross Douthat, New York Times columnist, and Rick Larsen, President and CEO of the Sutherland Institute, to discuss the Family Security Act—his proposal to provide greater financial security for American families by streamlining existing family policies to create one universal child benefit.

Senator Romney released the following statement about the crisis at our southern border: "The Biden administration’s lack of understanding of the power of incentives continues to baffle me: allowing unaccompanied minors to stay in the U.S. will yield a flood of unaccompanied minors. It’s de facto ‘child separation policy’." This statement follows his request last week for GAO's legal opinion on whether the Administration violated the Impoundment Control Act when the President suspended border wall funding and construction without lawful justification.

Utahns must think through how to deal with the water shortages in the West and adopt practices to conserve and manage water supplies that are consistent with our new reality. During an interview with Fox 13 News, Senator Romney spoke to Max Roth about the looming negotiation over the Colorado River Compact and the importance of rethinking how allocations are made since certain states have been taking a disproportionate share.

The Chinese Communist Party is exacting genocide against the Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. This week, Senator Romney, the lead Republican on the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, joined a group of colleagues in introducing a resolution condemning the CCP’s treatment of the Uyghur people and calling for an investigation into the crimes and abuses committed against them.

Later in the week, he helped lead an East Asia Subcommittee hearing on the U.S. response to the recent coup in Burma, which has led to enormous amounts of violence and civil unrest. Burma's military leaders have killed 260 people and detained 2,200 citizens since the coup. Senator Romney asserted that the United States must must lead an international effort to expand the sanctions placed on these Burmese military leaders, and call upon China to join this effort or suffer the public exposure of callous disregard for the plight of humanity.
