As Senate Democrats continued their theatrical antics in Washington this week, Senator Romney continued to defend the filibuster—a critical tool of the Senate—and push back on Democrats’ attempts to enact a partisan, federal takeover of our elections. There was great irony and hypocrisy later in the week when Senate Democrats used the filibuster to kill legislation that would have pushed back on Putin’s nefarious behavior and worked to safeguard Ukraine’s autonomy. Senator Romney also highlighted the Biden Administration’s lack of preparation for the current COVID-19 surge caused by the Omicron variant. Keep scrolling for more news.

It’s absurd to claim that to 'save a democracy,' the Democratic party, which has the barest majority in recent history, must overhaul one of our vital democratic institutions—the Senate. The power given to the minority is one of the Senate’s defining features; therefore, eliminating the filibuster would give way to extremism by removing the requirement for political consensus, which is in Americans’ best interests.

Senator Romney spoke on the Senate floor in defense of the filibuster, criticizing Democrats’ radical attempts to remake our vital governmental institutions.

The lack of COVID tests available amid the Omicron surge is a result of the Biden Administration's failure to build up testing capacity while COVID infections were relatively low. Given the uncertainty of this virus, we must ensure that we're better prepared for the potential of new variants and future surges.

During a health committee hearing, Senator Romney highlighted the important role scientists play in the fight against COVID, pressed health officials on the Administration’s failure to build testing capacity, and requested data-driven guidance for the American people on when they should be getting tested.

Russia is trying to blackmail Europe while playing a victim. Putin has amassed over a hundred thousand troops at the border of the Ukraine, all the while manipulating Europe’s energy supply. The Nord Stream 2 pipeline gives Putin more leverage over Ukraine, makes Western Europe more dependent on Russia, and prevents the United States from maintaining a united front with our partners.

We must stand united with our allies and lead urgent action to deter Putin’s bully tactics in Europe. Although filibustered by Senate Democrats, Senator Romney joined a bipartisan group of senators in voting in favor of the Protecting Europe's Energy Security Implementation Act, legislation to impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The Senator also expressed his support for efforts which would provide aid to Ukraine and strengthen NATO’s position in Eastern Europe.
