It's in our best interest for Ukraine to defeat Russia.

Following the tragic shooting in Buffalo, Senator Romney issued this statement:

“Good and evil in stark relief: the demonic Buffalo shooter and the heroic officer Aaron Salter, Jr. who returned fire, making himself a vulnerable target. Voices of hate inspire acts of horror; honor streams from the better angels of our nature.”

In Washington, Senator Romney continued to press the Administration to take immediate steps to remedy the baby formula crisis. He also remained a strong advocate for sending additional military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine to help them combat the brutal Russian invasion, ending the week by helping pass a $40 billion Ukraine funding bill. Senator Romney also introduced legislation to prevent President Biden from cancelling nearly $2 trillion in student loan debt. Keep scrolling for a brief recap of the week:

Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom while being brutally violated by Russia. This week, the Senate passed legislation providing $40 billion in additional military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Senator Romney strongly advocated for the Ukraine funding bill, not only because it was the right thing to do, but also because it’s in the best interest of America to see Ukraine succeed and Russia fail.

A fine line exists between tackling disinformation and government censorship—and the U.S. government’s plan to operate a disinformation board is a terrible idea. Senator Romney joined colleagues in requesting that any funding for such board be prohibited in the next government funding bill. Earlier this month, Senator Romney confronted Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about the disinformation board and called on the Administration to disband it immediately.

It makes no sense for the Biden Administration to cancel nearly $2 trillion in student loan debt. This decision would not only be unfair to those who already repaid their loans or decided to pursue alternative education paths, but it would be wildly inflationary at a time of already historic inflation.

Senator Romney led a group of colleagues in introducing the Student Loan Accountability Act, legislation that would prevent President Biden from using dubious legal authority to cancel student loan debt at the expense of the millions of Americans who chose to not go to college or worked diligently to pay off any student debt. If the President moves forward with his plan, the cancellation of these loans would also add $1.7 trillion to the national debt.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has underscored the importance of alliances between freedom loving countries to bolster cooperation and security. Senator Romney met with Finland’s Ambassador to the U.S. Mikko Hautala to discuss their application for NATO membership and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Finland and Sweden have long been security partners to NATO and their recent decisions to seek NATO membership is welcome news.

To cap off National Police Week, Senator Romney joined his colleagues in sponsoring a resolution to honor the 576 officers lost in the line of duty in 2021 and reiterating support for the men and women in law enforcement. This resolution was unanimously adopted by the Senate. Senator Romney also thanked our law enforcement officers for all that they do to keep our communities safe in a video message.
