Democratic

Recognizing
the
outstanding
military
service
of
veterans
is

honor

Iowa’s

Tuesday,
August
2,
I
will
host
a
Purple
Heart
Medal
Ceremony
in
Des
Moines
to
honor
the
sacrifices
made
by
two
Iowa
veterans.
Earlier
this
year,
I
convened
a
hearing
to
explore
whether
the
Justice
Department
is
effectively
evaluating
state
recreational
marijuana
legalization's impact
on its
federal
enforcement
priorities.
Unfortunately, a
recent
study
showed
a
sharp
increase
in
exposure
to
marijuana
among
young
children
in
Colorado,
where
the
drug
has
been
legalized
recreationally,
indicating
that
the
Administration’s
decision
to
overlook
its
responsibility
to
enforce
federal
law
is
indeed
having
documentable
negative
consequences
among
vulnerable
populations.
The
need
for
general
surgeons
is
especially
high
in
rural
and
other
under-served
communities.
Inspired
by
a
general
surgeon
in
Keokuk,
I introduced
bipartisan
legislation
to
produce
high
quality
data
on
where
general
surgeons
are
in
short
supply
around
the
country
so
we
can
better
address
this
problem.
In
recent
years
there
has
been
an
alarming
increase
in
spending
under
the
Medicare
catastrophic
prescription
drug
program.
I asked
the
top
administrator
of
Medicare
for
insight
into
this
troubling
trend
and
whether
drug
companies
might
be
exploiting
the
benefit.
