Remembering The Orlando Tragedy

My heart goes out to all those affected by the horrendous act of terror in Orlando, and Susan and I join all North Carolinians in keeping the victims and their families in our thoughts and prayers. This past week, we were reminded of the true character of our nation and its people, witnessing the courage and bravery of law enforcement officials and first responders, as well as the generosity of everyday Americans who formed long lines to donate blood to help save the lives of victims. The exceptional values and resiliency of Americans demonstrate why we will never be intimidated by the likes of ISIS terrorists and their cowardly acts of evil.

Moving forward, it is important for us to put the political extremes at the door in order to properly address this threat and prevent another tragedy like Orlando from occurring on our homeland.

Funding And Supporting
Our Troops

This week, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), legislation that funds the military, provides servicemembers with pay raises, and reforms TRICARE, the health care system for servicemembers, reservists, and their family members. The NDAA reaffirms our nation’s commitment to fully funding our brave men and women in uniform and providing support to military families who already make tremendous sacrifices on behalf of our nation. I fought to include the following provisions in the legislation:

  • Improve the rapid deployment capabilities of Fort Bragg by extending the Pope Airfield Runway.
  • Reform TRICARE, the military healthcare system, by increasing collaboration between the military and private sector.
  • Support military spouses by closing a loophole that will make it easier to obtain federal employment.

When this bipartisan legislation lands on the President’s desk, he has an obligation to quickly sign it into law to send a clear message to the world that the leaders of the United States are united when it comes to supporting our troops and strengthening our military.

Thank you for taking the time to read my update, I will continue to work hard to represent all North Carolinians in the Senate and deliver results. As always, please don't hesitate to contact my office if we can assist you in any matter regarding a government agency. If you would like to unsubscribe from my e-newsletter, please click here.
